Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Spain.
Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started blogging a decade ago when I was a stay at home mom with a desperate need for a creative outlet. I loved to decorate, but we were on a tight budget so I knew that I would have to figure out how to do everything myself. So that’s what I did, and I documented my projects along the way. I started out never having used power tools before and showing people that if I can figure it out, then anyone can. Over time, people started visiting my site and it accidentally turned into a business. I started learning new skills and building on those skills over time and gradually started working with brands. I became passionate about challenging myself to learn new skills and hopefully inspiring others to do the same. I started decorating and building furniture and sharing tutorials on my website and YouTube channel and showcasing my projects on social media. I recently branched out and started pursuing photography (portraits and concerts) as well so now I am balancing both businesses and having fun continuing to learn new things.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road but definitely a gradual process. It’s not a “make money overnight” sort of a business. It’s something you have to work at growing over time. It just happens to be something I’m passionate enough about that I stuck with it long enough to make a living doing it, and I am thankful to be able to do that.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a design and DIY content creator. I specialize in sharing decorating ideas and DIY tutorials on my blog and YouTube channel, as well as sharing my projects on social media. I am proud of the fact that I am able to show people that we are all capable of more than we may think. If I can do it, anyone can. I enjoy challenging stereotypes, as woodworking and welding tend to be traditionally male-dominated trades. I want women to know that they are just as capable of pursuing those things too, and there’s something empowering about knowing how to do those things yourself. I love learning new skills and inspiring others to challenge themselves too.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I started out with no DIY experience at all, and I’ve been able to learn as I go. Power tools may seem intimidating at first, but once you give it a try you realize it isn’t so scary and building things really is easier than you think.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I worked in the nonprofit sector before I had children and started blogging. I was a “wish coordinator” for an organization called Children’s Wish Foundation, so it was my job to coordinate wishes for terminally ill children. I’ve always had a passion for helping others, and I aspire to start my own nonprofit organization at some point too. I believe we should all use our own unique skillsets for good whenever we can, so I’ve volunteered in the past with nonprofits making over homes for families transitioning out of homelessness, and I would love to start my own organization doing similar work.
