Conversations with Jose Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Hernandez.

Hi Jose, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family and I are immigrants to the United States.

I grew up in a very low-income home as a child and how important money truly was first-hand at a young age.

Thanks to baseball, I’m the first person in my family to go to school in the US.

With my athletic scholarship, I decided to study finance as a student athlete in college.

While in college, I worked to network in order to find opportunities in the financial industry once my baseball days were over.

After school, I was given the opportunity to start my career in wealth management at one of the top investment advisory firms in the country (located in Buckhead).

I received first-class mentorship from two top Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) and learned the ins and outs of financial planning and wealth management through working with my own clients.

After a couple of years, I started feeling an urge to start sharing what I was learning hands-on in the industry.

I wanted to start using social media to help others learn how to invest and build wealth.

Unfortunately, I had to make a decision between staying in the industry or pursuing my vision.

I chose the latter and started my social media brand in 2019, along with Financial University, my online educational platform.

My mission is to impact as many people as possible and help them take control of their financial futures by providing them with first-class Financial education.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road.

My decision to leave an extremely promising career behind so I could do what I do on social media and Financial University was not well received by my immediate peers at the time.

I had to learn how to create content and build a Financial education company practically on my own, with little immediate support.

Countless times I’ve had to step outside of my comfort zone and overcome new obstacles and challenges that come with building something from scratch.

I’m grateful for the ups and downs of the journey so far.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in financial education, namely in the areas of investing and financial planning.

I’m known for helping millennials learn how to invest and build long-term wealth.

I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to overcome the opportunity cost involved with stepping away from an incredibly promising career as a financial advisor in order to make a much larger impact on many more people.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I would consider my mentor to be the late Bob Proctor.

I owe a lot of my success to his teachings.

I had direct mentors in my time in the financial industry who taught me virtually everything I know today about investing and financial planning.

Being open and receptive to guidance when you’re new to something is very important.

Applying what you learn matters just as much.
