Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Saint.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am from a rural town in Mississippi called Inverness. I was inspired to become an artist at the age of three. From that young age, my mom would always give me a box of crayons and sheets of white copy paper to watch me draw very complicated lines. I remember once during elementary school, my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Fisher, introduced the class to the creation of a piece of art for a contest for my hometown’s art museum, Gin Mill Galleries. My art piece was chosen. From that moment, I knew I was meant to be an artist. Nothing else mattered in life to me as much as fashion and art. I knew that I could be free. My mother would take my brothers and me to the shopping malls at a very young age. Even then, we were always complimented on our looks. Fortunately, she would always let us pick what we wanted and never tried to stop our creative minds. I would always be drawn to fashion and art in movies, television shows, and magazines. Later in life, I was heavily captivated by makeup. I would always play around with my brows with makeup before brows were a trend. Once I transitioned into high school things became a little different for me. This was around the time Instagram and Facebook were coming into form, so I would say 2009 or 2010. I’ve always been intrigued by the look of androgynous boys. I knew about makeup but never really got a chance to get into it. Sometimes I would find magazines around the house with the samples in them to try. That still wasn’t enough. Finally, my time came when I got some money for either Christmas or my birthday. I went to the local Beauty Supply Store and bought a powder foundation compact with a brow pencil. I tried them and it was like magic. Never would I have thought that I would fall in love with makeup art. From that moment on, I started to become good at it. A lot of people started asking me how my brows were so perfect, and eventually they became clients.
Once I graduated high school, I chose to further my career in Fine Arts at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS. While there I was able to truly come into form and realize who I was as a person. Girls around campus were in love with my look and often ask to make them look like me. I started doing makeup out of my dorm room. Later I would work behind stage of fashion shows and even television.
Once I graduated I decided to pursue my career in Atlanta, a second home for me. Around middle school, my late brother Major moved here. We had an inseparable bond that no one could replace. I was traveling back and forth to Atlanta a lot during the summer months and heavily on weekends during my college life. Subconsciously, I knew I would maybe end up here. I know my brother would be proud of me, seeing where I am today. I believe that his home in Atlanta and my living with him allowed me to express myself even more by being in the area partly because the Atlanta LGTBQ community is very outspoken. This community is more acceptable compared to other southern cities. For that reason, it allowed me to be myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been as easy as it seems. Most people expect artists to work as a robot. I was in my last year of college taking the max number of credit hours on campus while losing my brother Major. That made me question everything. I was still determined to get myself through. I pushed myself the most around that time, but I think it quickly died. I can definitely say I did go through an artist block, but during that time I found myself again and allowed myself to heal the correct way. Meanwhile, I studied old fashion icons and moguls. I found reinvention in myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist who creates art through makeup and who also loves fashion. I dived fully into the art form of makeup and fashion. People know me for my platform which is blonde hair, unique fashion and art. I have always had a love for fashion and creating art. I have always been invested in my outer appearance. I use my fashion to express how I feel. I became proud when I was able to travel around the U.S. to make others feel as gorgeous or fly as I feel on a daily basis. What sets me apart is me being able to be innovative when it comes to how I look or when I create art. My ideas usually come from dreams that I’ve had. Then I would take those dreams and turn them into reality.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am still very much into the magazines I grew up on such as Vogue, Essence, Jet Beauty, US Magazine and Home Living. It keeps me inspired.
