Today we’d like to introduce you to LeAnne Mitchell.
Hi LeAnne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
To give you a little backstory, I started doing hair during my senior year of high school. Prior to that, I took classmates as clients for sew ins here and there but decided to take my craft serious during OEC my senior year. Being exposed to the different aspects of hair really allowed me to perfect the work I was providing. Over time, I began to try new trends on clients, as well as take webinars and classes. Being someone who is a perfectionist, using myself as a model was also a huge asset in the success I’ve gained because I’m able to provide the same quality service to my clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a hairstylist has definitely brung its challenges. The hardest aspect thus far was building clientele. In the beginning, the challenge was between staying true to self and mastering my skills or following trends. Decisions really had to be based on my clientele and what services were in high demand so that’s what I chose to focus on.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hairstylist who specializes in hair extensions and natural hair care. I personally believe I’m most known for my installs. What sets me apart from the rest is the quality of work I provide and the level of professionalism. Along with me actually having a passion for doing hair. I am heavily invested in the health of my clients hair between installs because I believe as black women, our tresses are truly our crowns. Overtime, I’ve had clients confide in me about how they’ve grown to feel insecure about to condition of their hair and how they want to embrace it more. That alone gave me the push I needed to invest myself in research about different hair conditions. Yes, an install may be a protective style but the act of protecting the integrity of our hair is what’s most important to me.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice would definitely be to remain consistent and believe in yourself. Success doesn’t happen overnight but as long as you believe in yourself, the possibilities are endless. As an entrepreneur, I can candidly say I’ve had days where I stressed about how I could make a name for myself when there are other talented stylists around. However, I’ve found motivation in knowing that everyday, I’m going to attract the client that is for me. As long as I continue to nurture my passion, it will be seen through my work. Never give up.
