Daily Inspiration: Meet Jason Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Smith.

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
CEO of Hummingbird Kitchen And Bath. My passion for kitchen and bathroom renovation developed throughout my life, I used to make wooden hand cart to play with at age ten, when I leave high school age 16 I got my first job at total surfaces in Kingston Jamaica as a sander for custom made cabinets. Which that opportunity open more doors where I learn how to make cabinet, spray and install them. I moved to Georgia in 2009, in 2010 I apply for a job at premier surfaces to be installer apprentice for countertops. Throughout my years there, I was given multiple opportunity due to my skill set and integrity for the trade and I capitalized on every one of them from working on celebrity houses and even the Mercedes stadium doing each job to the best of my abilities. In 2017 I decided to start my own company merging both skillset. Installing cabinet and countertops as a subcontractor for big box store and a few cabinet and countertops companies. My love for the trade gotten even more stronger when I started going to business seminar and learning more about the business fundamentals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is never smooth you gonna have potholes and speed bumps. Trust me, there was days where I felt like just throwing in the towel but my 3Ds kept me going DETERMINATIONS, DEDUCTIONS & DISCIPLINED.

Some of the major struggles was more of getting connections to big box store and companies so you can have a secure contract because waking up and having to worry about where tomorrow’s work is coming from was never a good feeling.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Kitchen and bathroom renovation, we have multiple cabinets lines from RTA to semi-custom.

I am focused on the cabinets and countertops now, I will venture more deeper into being a GC so I can do more full home remodels but I have to obtain a General contractor license which am studying for.

The quality of our work, communication, the A level customer service experience we provide is what makes us proud and help us separate ourselves from the competition.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is a most!! You have to be risk taker in the construction industry. My biggest risk was taking out a secure loan to get to started and I didn’t have enough work at that time, half that money was used to purchase a truck within two weeks, the truck broke down coming in from sunset North Carolina. The truck was in the shop for two weeks. I had to borrow my dad’s truck to help out.

Even in the covid-19, I had to take risk and make some major sacrifice because a lot of our connections was going out of business so we had to source new ones, the lead time on material was ridiculous there was months I had to risk using my mortgage to flip jobs.
