Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Sanders.
Hi Kyle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started when I picked up a bass in my middle school years and teaching myself to play songs from my favorite metal bands. After seeing footage of my biggest influences play live, it sealed the deal…that’s what I want to do with my life. I put all other extracurricular activities to the side and played in my room for hours a day until I found like-minded people who wanted to do the same. I always knew there was more to life than doing ordinary things and living an ordinary life so that was the drive to keep pushing forward and not stopping until I figured all that out. Other than my dad, I didn’t do well working for someone else. I wanted to do what I wanted to do how I wanted to do it and somehow make a living out of it. There’s too many unhappy people in the world so I didn’t want to go down that path. Playing and performing music is what makes me happy so that was obviously the answer. You gotta go for it and make it happen.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth, especially in the music world. It may ease up a bit at times but then it will totally blindside you, come at you from behind full speed like a freight train and derail everything. Unless you’re a solo artist and play every instrument, you have to work with others and work well. That’s never easy but we’re all pieces of a much larger puzzle, you just have to figure out where and how you fit. I’ve played in bands most of my life now and nothing is ever perfect. You’re constantly learning and adapting with the times. It sometimes feels like it’s all a big test of how much you can handle and let’s see what you’re going to do about it. Persistence is key and failing is simply not an option.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For the better part of my life now, I’ve been recording and touring the world. In 2018 I lost a legend of a drummer, friend and bandmate right in the middle of recording a new record. I was forced with another decision on what to do. Instead of wallowing in grief, I knew I had to put my energy into something positive. Knowing that I’m never done with making music and performing, I needed time to process and take a step back from the touring life and give back. Since 2019 I’ve been proud to be the owner of Let There Be Rock School in Gainesville Georgia, which is basically a rock n roll community center without an age limit. I have students from 5-70 taking lessons, forming bands and playing shows. I can teach the younger generation what not to do, things I had to learn the hard way. It is the perfect place to learn to play but have fun and at the same time. There are valuable lessons taught along the way that really pertain to all aspects of life. It’s a place where everyone can be themselves without judgment. You can be who you want to be, look how you want to look and connect with others just like you who you thought didn’t exist. Finding a real sense of belonging. It really is a magnet for the coolest and most creative folks out there, an outlet for some and therapy for others. Myself included.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Determination to succeed is everything. Knowing what you want and going for it letting nothing get in your way. Don’t settle for something that doesn’t truly make you happy….which in my book being happy in life is a success.
