Life & Work with Jaszy Shavers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaszy Shavers.

Hi Jaszy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a self-taught singer, songwriter, producer, and engineer on a mission to reignite the concept of ‘old school music’.

Originally from the Lowcountry, I’ve been a child of music since before I could really reach a mic. However, after moving to Atlanta in 2017 I ran into so many roadblocks that I fell back from it for a year or two. Others had convinced me that although I was good I wasn’t marketable, had too much competition and that I was too sweet for the industry. Thankfully, I woke up one day refusing to have my future determined for me. Decided it was my life purpose put every nickel and dime I had into equipment, software, learning and developing my skills. Practiced and created daily, studied my music idols and honed in on my own sound. Fast forward to today and I’m creating music with my favorite artists, engineers and producers – some I’ve been fans of for over a decade.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s often difficult when you’re the one with the vision – especially if it’s larger than life.

It seemed like people couldn’t see beyond the walls around me or themselves. Almost like, ‘what makes you think YOU can do it?’ And that used to affect me heavily. It wasn’t until I really got sick and tired of being sick and tired that I stopped tip-toeing around.

I realized I had to be my biggest fan, best friend and most honest critic in order to stand ten toes down. As a result, you win and lose some but none of it matters as long as you’re walking in your purpose. And in this stage of my life, that’s my main focus.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As I like to say, I do everything except rap.

I produce my music, engineer it, write it, mix it, master it and of course am the lead vocalist. I design all merchandise, advertisements and branded clothing. In addition, I produce and provide vocals for other artists and just started scoring indie tv shows and movies.

I think my overall sound and messages sets me apart. I make music that I feel 100% and plan to inspire generations just like my idols. And I’m going to do it my way. There are plenty of people who think they know me based off of my appearance or past but soon my music will make it clear.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans is a catch! I truly recommend all business or creative enthusiasts to invest in the hardcovers so one can take notes as needed. For someone as analytical as myself, it helped me break down my ideal life and the process to it via basic steps. Another great read is The Four Agreements – a book I pick-up and reread often for clarity and self-examination.
