Today we’d like to introduce you to Merrc.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started super early. I remember recording my first songs when I was 7. I’m not even sure why I started…. maybe because I had cousins around that was doing it and got influenced. But I remember my mom had this Dell desktop computer (back in the dial-up days) and I would search up music programs. By age 11, I was recording myself on this program called “Mixcraft” with a shitty microphone I got from Radioshack. Because I was living in Georgia, I was making crunk and snap music at that time. Eventually around that age, I started producing on FL Studio. You can say YouTube pretty much taught me everything I know today. So fast forward to 2015, I ended up getting my first beat placement with Roy Woods (Drake’s artist) and kept going up. Eventually, I got back into rapping and started dropping projects again in 2019. From there, I just kept the ball rolling.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I had a few ups and downs. I figured out that getting your first placement doesn’t mean your life will change. Well, to an extent it does, but looking from the outside in, you’d think it’d put you in a better position. In reality, it’s about putting out work consistently, building relationships, and surrounding yourself in better environments. I didn’t learn all that until like 2019. Another thing I deal with (but getting better at) is managing emotions. I be sad, mad, lonely, overly ambitious, doubtful, all the feelings that you can feel. I can say I’m thankful I’m learning all this now than if I was middle-aged.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For the most part, I’m known for producing and beat making. I do excel at this. I also engineer and write my own songs of course. I’m more interested in the marketing side of things these days. I guess what makes me the most proud is when I release a whole project which is almost entirely produced by me. I’ve done that with a few upcoming artists and I always get hyped when they release a project or song that I’m helped them with.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I like to watch interviews of artists that I like and study them. No Jumper is a good one. I don’t read often these days, but Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is a great book to get inspired by. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Gucci Mane autobiography are inspiring as well.
