Inspiring Conversations with Isaac Gordon of Breakpoint Booking

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Gordon.

Hi Isaac, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a strong passion for music and entertainment. My earliest childhood memories were centered around music e.g. my older sisters blasting Madonna, Michael Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Devo. Our kitchen radio was stuck on WZAK for at least a decade. I had a short phase of wanting to be an electrical engineer at age seven but by ten, I had written my first rhyme and it was pretty much a wrap after that. I learned how to record music on Cool Edit Pro and make beats on a Korg Triton as soon as I was old enough to own it all. I was in a Hip Hop group while I was in high school. We had two songs in rotation on WZIP Z88. This was before social media so when we promoted, we hit the streets hand-drawn flyers and cassette tapes! Disc burning came later. Ultimately, I needed an accessible entry point to the music industry. Northeast Ohio offered radio and TV broadcasting, which I sunk my teeth into.

In 2004, I left Ohio for Philadelphia to work in radio, but this is also when I started managing and booking bands on my own. I tried the corporate, nine to five life but somehow still ended up at venues by the merch table or in someone’s home studio listening session. A few years later, I found myself at music conferences on panels, coaching aspiring musicians. A few years after that I was in New York City interning for both a talent management company and a booking agency which ultimately led me to where I am today, running my own boutique booking agency and management company.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is a really interesting question because I can’t imagine someone replying with a no struggle story! I mean they say if it comes easy, it won’t last, right? Struggles are what you make of them though. In a strange way, I was looking forward to the struggle. Like I knew moving to New York City wasn’t going to be easy and if I somehow found a way to make it easy, I was doing it wrong. Struggles can be reassuring. At the end of the day though, I am a human being. Some days I’m going to be depressed about it and other days, I’m going to find the light. When I left Ohio for my first big boy job, I was immediately laid off no more than five months later. The guy that laid me off called another radio station and begged them to give me a job. So while some may consider that a terrible day, and trust me I certainly did at the time, it taught me how important it is to be good at your job.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a boutique booking agency currently specializing in music and comedy. We are ranked #1 on Google for the search term “boutique booking agency” and we are pretty excited about it. I founded the company in 2018 when I decided to set out on my own as an entrepreneur. I love working with developing talent and found that being on my own was a way to work with who I wanted. We have had the honor of being the first booking agency to book talents such as Tank & The Bangas, Benny The Butcher, Jane Handcock, Harry Mack, and Lost Dog Street Band. We pride ourselves with finding talent that is right at that “breaking point” hence the name. In January (2022), we officially launched our comedy department representing acts with various credits from Saturday Night Live alum to CONAN and Comedy Central appearances. We are one of the few black-owned talent agencies. We service nightclubs, amphitheaters, coffee shops, venues, live streaming, comedy clubs, PACs, colleges, fairs, casinos, weddings, and corporate or private parties and events worldwide. Our current presence stretches Atlanta, Cleveland and Los Angeles with LA being home base but we have agents located in Denver, NYC, Chicago and New Jersey.

What’s next?
I am excited about creating and growing powerfully. I’m excited to see my team grow and gain experience. I’m especially excited for an endemic.

We have a lot of artists who want to hit the road so we are excited to help them do so. We also have a lot of new clients who we are excited to grow and work with. I’d also say I’m excited about networking so if you are reading this hit us up!
