Today we’d like to introduce you to Selam Woldemichael.
Hi Selam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always had a strong love for photography. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved and enjoyed being in front of the camera and smiling big 🙂 Although my dad was an amateur photographer and my sister who also had a love for photography had a photo studio, I didn’t think of becoming a photographer but continued to enjoy being in front of the camera. Then about ten years ago when I had moved to Seattle, just randomly I started taking pictures of people on the street and the city using my cell phone. That’s when I became very passionate about photography and wanted to learn photography from the roots of it. Soon I bought my very first DSLR camera but I couldn’t go to photography school till I moved to Atlanta because of other priorities in my life at that time. Once I moved to Atlanta, I started going to photography school shortly after. After I got done with photography school, I formed my photography business under Selam photogenic LLC.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there are some challenges here and there but my biggest challenge is time. Although I am pretty good at time management, there is never enough time in a day. I am a wife and mother of three. I manage the accounting for a transportation company me and my husband own along with my photography company.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional photographer. I enjoy taking pictures of small events, birthday parties, graduation parties, engagements, pre-weddings, newborns, kids, families and portraits.
I specialized on creative shoots using my own ideas and colors. Photography has always been a creative outlet for me. I believe in capturing moments as they happen. I do not tell my clients to do the typical stand still and say cheese. I capture the real moments and the real them which is a storytelling that wasn’t put into words but rather in images forever which anyone can look at and read them.
Any big plans?
For the past one year, I have been under contract with a local photography studio as an elite and personal photographer which helped me to learn and understand more about different studio lights and setups. Right now, I do a lot of freelance work for my own company. When I need to do studio shoots either I have to rent out a studio or use one of my friends’ studios. So definitely I want to open up my own studio in the near future that will allow me to be more creative.
I have been selected as one of the photographers for Miguel Wilson’s wedding which is coming up in a couple of weeks. I am very thankful and excited about this opportunity and I am looking forward to it.
