Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Brown.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started learning photography in elementary school from my grandfather. He invest in a camera for me and during spring break I took classes at a children’s museum in Washington DC. I was told that photography wasn’t a career, so I went into Animal Science. I never put my camera down and brought it with me everywhere. At first, it was friends’ birthdays, holidays with family and community events, but that changed about five years ago listening to homegirl’s stories.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I was not taken seriously and in general, if I was commissioned it was below the means of a professional price. When I would apply for the press to big named venues I was denied. I knew very little about other styles of photography and what was needed to pursue those careers in film photography.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a fine arts photographer, I’m creating bodies of work from a creative point that goes beyond just the image captured. Focusing on women from the African diaspora and giving them space to heal in the art world. Using my camera to tell their stories and film so they will be here forever. This work is to be installed in galleries, art institutions, museums and collectors
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Yes, film photography is becoming more drastically expensive,(camera and film). I think it will be a niche. Which is a huge shift during COVID that more people picked up a film cameras. I see in the next 5-10 years less film available and most photography sought out in the art world.
