Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Johnson.
Hi Ariel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was in my 2nd year of Physical Therapy school. I was able to start building a network over social media as I connected with other students and clinicians all over. I began gearing my platform towards mentorship for high school students and students of Physical therapy as I graduated. I knew there went many people of color in the field so I decided that my goal would be to share content that could make me visible to show another person of color that this pathway was possible. I came to Atlanta while finishing up Physical Therapy school and decided to stay as a Travel Physical Therapist. Since I’ve been here I’ve built my network at my job and in my community. I’ve realized that even though I am a minority in my field, I don’t feel like it anymore with the connections I’ve made and the diverse leadership I have been able to learn under. I even have been able to expand into other passions through this platform to explore interests in finance, public speaking, and brand partnerships.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have had struggles along the way with this journey. I was hesitant about moving to Atlanta after I finished school because I failed my board exam and I wasn’t able to begin my career as a licensed Physical Therapist (PT) yet. I was able to get support from my soon to be employers to work in another role as I moved forward with my relocation. I came to Atlanta to study and passed boards. I have been traveling the Atlanta area ever since going to different PT clinic outpatient offices within my company and connecting with other clinicians and brands.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an outpatient Physical Therapist (PT) in the outpatient setting. I am in residency working on an orthopedic specialist certification (OCS). What sets me apart from others is my presence on social media and platforms for diversity. I am most known for my posts on diversity and for being visible to other people of color that want to pursue the same path. I am most proud of the public speaking and mentoring that I have been able to do in my position.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I’m planning on moving into a permanent location in the Atlanta area and taking on a leadership role. I have also explored recruiting and mentorship within my company and on social media. I am looking forward to continuing to build my connections in the Atlanta area and building a clientele of my own to treat as a private Physical Therapist. My goal is to work for my company to continue to strive for diversity and build my independence to treat physical therapy clients independently. I hope to eventually have a business of my own with the flexibility to work as I please.
