Conversations with Sárah Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sárah Lee.

Hi Sárah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always tell people that I am a small-town girl, with big-time dreams. I was born in Conyers, GA, but I was raised in Decatur, IL.

Ever since I was a little girl I always had a passion for speaking to people.

My parents saw this within me at a very early age so when I was six years my dad created my very own radio show that we did together called the “Sarah B show” for young children. I remember hating it at the time because I wanted to do my own thing as a kid, but I didn’t realize he was helping me cultivate my talent as a communicator.

Even during my middle school and high school years, I attended a catholic school where I was very closed off because it was hard for me to truly fit in because no one looked like me at school or understood me. But I always used my chances during speech contests and presentations in class to showcase my creative ability and it helped me feel seen and stand in my power.

Fast forward to college, I decided to attend Lincoln College and major in Radio and Television broadcasting, I enjoyed my first two years at Lincoln because it gave me the opportunity to figure out what lane of media I wanted to be in and figure out my passion, I finished with my associate’s degree, but then I decided I wanted to transfer to my dream HBCU Hampton University in the fall of 2021.

I’ve always been very determined and the minute I stepped on Hampton’s campus I was ready to make my presence known and I have been doing exactly that.

The way I have gotten to where I am today at 20 years old is by doing what others won’t. I constantly research my career 24/7, I seek out the best mentors I can, and I am a very firm believer in manifestation, vision boards, journaling, and prayer.

I am a very intentional person, and once I know what I want I lock in and focus on that and that’s what has helped me so much so early on in my career. I truly block out anything that doesn’t serve my purpose and I go hard for what I want.

I just love being a student of the game because I have learned from listening to the greats you have to be willing to surrender, learn, and put in that work to get to where you wanna be and I just apply those lessons to my daily life. I have a journal that I have kept with me for three years now and I write down every single dream I want to accomplish, and I am watching it all unfold in real-time because of my drive, dedication, and patience.

Getting to interview Michael B. Jordan, Anthony Hamilton, Remy Ma, Terrence J, Michael Rainey Jr. and so many others has been incredible and getting all those interviews on my own with no handout has made achieving my goals that much greater.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success is never easy and I think I’m learning to accept that. Sometimes I want everything in life to be smooth, but I know it doesn’t work that way. My biggest struggles have actually been the ones that affect my mental.

I went through many ups and downs where I felt that I was on a time crunch, and it started hindering my growth because I started feeling impatient, lacking confidence, constantly comparing myself to others, and letting my ego in the way.

I can be a bit of a perfectionist, and even too much of that can become draining which made me burn out a lot while trying to juggle everything going on in my life.

I still have a long way to go in my journey, but I am aware of what challenges me and I work on it every single day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in being an interviewer, host, and media personality.

I am currently a Rising Senior at Hampton University majoring in Journalism.

I am known for being a campus personality at Hampton University. I have built my presence by independently interviewing some of the biggest names in Hollywood, I am the main anchor of Hampton University’s WHOV-TV, and I am also the campus host where I am most known for my show HU Drip Check where I show off the most fly outfits on campus.

I am most proud of the moments where I make an impact on people, especially on young women.

Sometimes when you’re working you don’t realize others are watching you, and I have had some beautiful moments of people expressing to me in person or dm-ing me long messages on Instagram telling me how much I inspire them, and having people come up to me wanting to take a picture or just even asking me questions about college and my experiences with my career so far is a great feeling and it inspires me to go harder.

What sets me apart from others is that I have my uniqueness and I have many layers sometimes it shocks a lot of people because they don’t expect to be so well versed in so many topics which make me an overall powerhouse.

I also love embracing my Ethiopian culture because it has helped shaped me as a woman and be connected to myself in a deeper way through my core values and traditions. That’s where I find my power! I feel like I can do it all and have it all brains, beauty, and hustle.
