Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Key.
Hi Richard, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It’s quite the journey to get here. I graduated at Alabama State University and thought I would rocket into a career as an attorney, then the bottom of the economy fell out.
I took on a few jobs figuring out my next steps and ended up in a retail management position at Walmart. Throughout my 8 year tenure, I sharpened my skills and improved my leadership traits until that ended abruptly in March 2020. In that moment, I decided to pursue a career in real estate, which was peaked by my mentor Nakia Warner, when I purchased my home in October 2019.
In my first year of real estate, I became a multi-million dollar producer and helped several of my VIP buyers move into their homes, some for the very first time. Since then, my production qualified to be a part of the Elite Club and Winner’s Circle (top 10% of the brokerage) along with becoming a Mentorship Graduate and winning the Pay It Forward award.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, this road was not smooth. Some of the unforeseen obstacles was the pandemic and the mass spread of Covid-19. I don’t believe anyone could’ve predicted what impact on the economy this would have. The stress of uncertainty is a huge factor. Coming from an environment of receiving compensation for working your shift and leaving everything at work…to now being 100% responsible for everything in yout business is a HUGE shift. Additionally, (which I haven’t shared this with many people), doing all of this while battling depression (at the time) was not easy as well.
Becoming a newly licensed real estate agent in an unprecedented market presented its own challenges (the spike in new home buyers with the low-interest rate leading to multiple offer situations. The most offers I’ve seen for one home during that time was 180 (One hundred and eighty people submitting offers for ONE home). It pushed me to become more “creative” with how I write and present offers to sellers and structured my business.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was VERY reserved, shy, timid, and really unsure of who I was as a person (a complete 180 of who I am today). Athletic (but husky😂). My friends and I were out all day playing sports, riding bikes, exploring nature, wrestling, etc. As I matured, interest transitioned to playing video games. Although I had friends, I never felt like I “fit in.”
One thing that I did notice about who I was, is having the ability to make others laugh. Humor and the ability to laugh, at myself and with others, really saved me in a sense and shifted the way I would approach and handle different situations throughout life. Anytime I felt down or bad about anything, my comedic humor would find the good in the situation. My dad really preached this to me as a kid and it worked.
Growing up, I hustled hard. At an early age, I recognized the beauty and benefitrs of being an entreprenuer. I sold pies in middle school and high school and made extra money doing so. I worked since the age of 16 (work-study program in high school) and always pushed myself to the next level. It took a little longer than anticipated, but here I am and we are JUST getting started.
