Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Ngome.
Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Both of my parents are from Cameroon, West Africa. I was fortunate to grow up between Texas and Georgia and I graduated from Riverdale High School, class of 2000. I moved to Houston for college and my career has evolved over time.
Currently, I am an inclusive marketing consultant with Line 25 Consulting. I work with organizations on diversity marketing strategies and development. Also, I’m the founder of the African American Marketing Association (AAMA) a nonprofit to galvanizes Black marketers and provide them with the resources and opportunities they need to grow their careers or business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but an interesting journey that continues to unfold. It took me six years before I launched the African American Marketing Association (AAMA). When the idea came to me I thought I was too young. I just graduated with my master’s degree and I was leaving my career in corporate finance to start my marketing business. Every year I would research to see if anyone created a similar organization, but nothing would come up. In 2018, I ran the idea by a few people for validation and I started planning. AAMA launched in February 2019 as a professional nonprofit membership organization to help our community.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about African American Marketing Association?
My time is split between Line 25 Consulting and AAMA. I am the principal consultant at Line 25 Consulting. L25C offers inclusive marketing consulting and training sessions to medium to large size companies. We walk our clients through our 5-Point Framework to Inclusive Marketing to help them create diverse teams and inclusive marketing campaigns. We provide a holistic approach that allows them to embed it into the company culture.
This year the African American Marketing Association hosted the inaugural Marketing For The Culture Summit at The Gathering Spot ATL in May. The theme was Monetize Your Content with speakers including Brianca Johnson, Tina Bonner, and Marquel Russell to name a few. Panels and workshops included scaling your business, lead generation, influencer marketing, and the metaverse. For a recap visit aa-ma.org.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons learned is the importance of believing in yourself. So many people will doubt your project or venture, even if you have a proven track record. Remain forward-thinking and execute to the best of your abilities.
