Rising Stars: Meet Di Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Di Wang.

Di, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am from Hangzhou, China. I am now a graduate student in illustration and motion media design at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I was full of interest and loved for painting since I was a child, so I chose the path of painting when I was in high school. During my undergraduate studies, the art education major I studied allowed me to try various painting methods and theoretical knowledge. In the various painting attempts at the undergraduate level, I found that illustration is the part I am interested in, so at the graduate level, I chose the illustration major. At the same time, dynamic works can make the illustrations more dynamic, therefore I also learn a lot of motion skills to make the illustrations more dynamic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every road cannot avoid some setbacks and difficulties. In the process of learning and exploring art, I actually encountered some confusion and difficulties. When I first started illustration, I was confused about my painting style. I do not know whether these painting styles are suitable for me and whether it is worth me to paint this subject matter. Fortunately, I have great professors and classmates. They encourage me and give me advice. At the same time, I constantly try different painting methods and techniques, so that my works can become unique and excellent.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My works are mainly based on illustrations and motion pieces. I am good at abundant colors and hand-painted textures. I also has a strong interest and exploration in children’s book illustration and dynamic motion pieces. In terms of illustration, I like to use hand-drawn textured digital painting for illustration, and I use stone clay to handcraft some objects and characters. Clay objects are brought into my illustrations through Photoshop, and I use digital methods to add a lot of decorative elements to enrich my illustrations. Moreover, the special properties of stone clay material make my illustrations more three-dimensional. On the other hand, my motion pieces are mostly based on illustrations. The transition from static to dynamic makes my work more interesting and more engaging to the audience.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Firstly, I will conduct preliminary research and communication with people, which will allow me to understand the customer’s preferences and the desired end result. Then, I start designing and painting works. During the creation, I also communicate with people to make the work more perfect.
