Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Hight, Jr.
Terrence, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was eight I worked as a part-time evening custodian and handy-man with my great-grandfather. He paid me about $20 per job and that experience sparked an entrepreneurial fire that still burns today.
During undergrad, I was studying to become an attorney but after working in several law firms and in the music business, I acknowledged that my true passion was entrepreneurship. I immediately scrapped all of my law school applications and begin applying to MBA and Executive MBA programs, in order to gain a deeper fundamental understanding of business.
Since 2009, I’ve founded four companies and played a key role in over a dozen others. Businesses ranging from record labels, brand management, and event promotion companies, to marketing firms and healthcare technology companies. I did all of this while balancing school, a corporate career and a family of 5 (a wife and 3 sons).
Through this journey, I’ve found a ton of people that start businesses or have tremendous ideas but lack the business fundamentals to ensure a foundation for success. With that in mind, I developed a plan that would increase the likelihood of a business’s success by focusing on core business functions that are essential to the foundation of any business. In 2014, that plan became The Hight Effect.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all but I wouldn’t change it for anything! Some of the struggles along the way include literally losing everything (house, car, cell phone off, etc.) twice, all because a business didn’t continue to increase in traction or a business relationship went sour.
Other struggles include hearing “NO” and how bad your idea is A LOT, and having the will to reevaluate the situation, pivot if necessary and keep going. Fortunately for every 100 “no’s” there’s typically one “yes” that allows the businesses to keep going. Ultimately, the entrepreneurial journey is one that is physically, mentally and emotionally taxing at times, but to me, the reward of impacting lives outweighs the struggles faced during the journey.
Please tell us about The Hight Effect.
The Hight Effect is an Atlanta based consulting agency focused on helping entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses achieve their business goals. We do this by providing core business services and resources essential to the foundation of every business. Services and resources that range from business plans, legal and marketing to website development, hosting and social media management.
Thus far, our biggest accomplishment has been the smooth transition of one of our largest client’s e-commerce site. We were able to transition their hosting, re-build the site, add over 20 new products (with descriptions) and have it fully functioning within 10 days. Prior to our involvement, this Valued Partner (client) had been working for several months to get their site completed and we accomplished this seamlessly.
What sets us apart is that we take a unique approach to every business’s needs, focusing on the vision and goals of the founder/founding team while providing customized hands-on solutions to help them get there.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is when my sister and I pretended we owned a trucking company with our bikes. We would ride through our neighbor’s yards all day, transporting products (toys) from various places along the way. We always had to be inside by the time the street light came on. 🙂
