Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Bently.
Hi Miles, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story starts with art, art has always been one of my longstanding passions. Even as a kid I remember drawing being one of the only things that made my mind sound. My mom and older brother never fail to remind me of the Harry Potter-like office under the stairs I had because my art supplies stayed all over the place. We eventually moved from Norfolk, Virginia down south to the quaint town of Morven, Georgia. Morven has only one convenience store, the local peach shed, and a dollar general. Oh and I can’t forget, the only restaurant in town is a barbeque joint that bears my last name. I wasn’t a fan of sports or the outdoors (blame my allergies) so drawing was my easiest resort. My people always encouraged me to stay in a sketchbook, so I carried that with me. No matter the medium, my love for color and pictures has pulled me out of some really morbid times. As I got older that manifested into what everyone sees today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? More like a dirt road after a week of constant rain, so slick and muddy that if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll slide right into a ditch! That said, I faced my fair share of adversity. Whether it be my formative years in elementary school plagued with the cruelty of white kids and their developing repertoire of insults. In middle school, my parents got divorced, and I found a reason to resent everyone, or in high school when my dad and aunt had their scares with cancer. I’ve experienced trauma to my core, some stuff I still can’t bring myself to talk about, and some stuff I draw light from. The most recent example would be when I lost my great grandmother on December 30th, 2020 right before the turn of the year. I specifically remember she’d come into town at 9 a.m. so she and I could go pick pecans and sell them up the road. Everything I know about hard work and building something for yourself from her. Excuse my language, but her passing was the kick in the ass I needed. Struggling is a state of mind, never stay in that too long.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The best way I can describe what it is that I do is “IT ALL.” Whether it be coming up with the concept of a shoot, how the model is going to be styled, or which pictures make it to the net at their designated times. I equally have my hand in some of everything. I am a creative director, photographer, stylist, screenwriter, artist, social media strategist, and a rookie model when I’m feeling up to it. My talent is versatile and adaptable to anything presented to me. However, I’d like to think I’m recognized for how my visuals give off a feeling of warmness and allure. Having the ability to find beauty and intimacy in the things people would normally miss, or look over is what sets me apart. Also my intense need for individuality as well, lol I wanna be different so bad. Lastly, I’m most proud of a project that hasn’t even been released yet, a short film I refer to as “Project X” that’s been in the works for upwards of three years!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I was afforded a childhood full of experiences; so it’s just too many! From trips to the dollar store with my nana and papa or random day trips to the beach with my mom, I relish in all these memories, big or small. However, if I had to choose it’d probably be my summers spent in Key West with my grandparents and my older brother. We’d spend the days deep-sea fishing, eating all the junk food and fresh fruit we could bear, or fighting because my brother refused to let much watch Hairspray on the living room tv. I was so blessed to be born to my people, they’re really big on learning through experience. What better way to give you an idea about what the world has to offer?
