Daily Inspiration: Meet Dawn Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Hill.

Hi Dawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story with Free Bikes 4 Kidz Atlanta started because I wasn’t feeling fulfilled by my day job any more – selling advertising was a grind. I saw the ad on Facebook that they were looking for an Executive Director, so I sent in my resume. Cycling is my passion and I had gone from being dropped (and getting lost) on beginning rides to leading rides out of the Lifetime Fitness near my house. I was so excited to be able to share that with underserved children in our community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like with any nonprofit, there have been bumps in the road, but being able to distribute bikes to the kids at the end of each year makes it all worthwhile! The pandemic challenged us like it did everyone. Getting people to donate bikes was tough in a global bike shortage, and getting volunteers to show up to our warehouse to work on bikes was even tougher. We are also always looking for corporate partners who align with our mission and support our cause, whether that’s through financial support, hosting bike builds or committing to volunteer. We’re really proud that we’ve been able to keep going and give away hundreds of bikes each year, no matter the circumstances.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m the Executive Director of Free Bikes 4 Kidz Atlanta, a nonprofit that helps all kids ride into a happier, healthier childhood by providing bikes to those most in need. The public donates gently used bikes, we organize hundreds of volunteers to clean and refurbish them, and then we give them away to kids in need.

We work with community partners like Atlanta Public Schools, Big Brothers Big Sisters, International Rescue Committee and more to match our bike inventory with the perfect recipient. Each year, we give away hundreds of bikes to kids in our community in a sustainable way! Find out more at fb4katl.org.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We are always looking for people who are passionate about our mission to get involved. Give us a follow on our social channels and visit our website at fb4katl.org.
