Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela York.
Hi Michaela, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was only 15 years old when I gave birth to my eldest son. He is now 11 years old. He is the one who gave me the strength and courage to make something of myself. I was a pregnant teenager in the 9th grade. High school can be hard, especially when you are pregnant. I was picked on not only by students but also by teachers. I vividly remember one teacher telling me that I would never amount to anything because I had a child at an early age in front of my entire class. I graduated high school (19th in my class), went onto college and got my degree in Criminal Justice, and was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I was one of the lucky ones and treatments were mild. However, I was told that I wouldn’t bear any more children. I started tinting windows in a shop when I was only 21 years old. I had never even thought of the process or how someone would go about tinting a window before. Within a year of being in the film industry, I began competing in worldwide competitions. Being a female in an industry that is dominantly male, it can be hard to gain the trust of customers while getting started. However, I traveled all over America tinting windows as a subcontractor for one year. By the time I was 24, I had visited 38 states. After that, many changes happened in my life. I met the love of my life and we found out that we were pregnant! I had my second son when I was 25, and he is my miracle child! Only five months after giving birth to him, I opened my own window tint shop in Hartwell, Georgia on February 1st, 2020. March came and brought Covid with it in full speed. I just knew that my little business would never prosper after that. However, the business became very prominent and got busier during the shutdown. I never expected my little business to become what it is today. We now host car show benefits to help our local volunteer fire department and give back to our community for helping us to make it this far.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in window tint and graphics. Everyone in town knows me at “the tint girl”. My biggest accomplishment is being a full-time mom and still running my business. I named my shop “KC Tint & Graphics” after my boys’ Kayne and Cayson. I’m mostly set apart from the rest of the industry because I am a female. When I competed in the International Window Film Association’s competition June 2021 in Orlando, Florida I was one of three females in over 120 competitors.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Customer service. Before getting into the film industry, I worked many jobs in customer service ranging from restaurants to being a professional makeup artist.
