Meet Jenn Cook of Drea James Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Cook.

Jenn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my designs in 2008 here in Atlanta after a friend suggested I show my pieces to a boutique. They bought everything & I knew I wanted to continue to share my creations from then on! Everything is one of a kind, as unique as the people who buy them. I focus on incorporating vintage findings, gemstones, mixing textures & styles in my designs. I started doing beaded meditation necklaces & wrist malas last year, which I adore getting to do. When I create, I tap into my imagination & it soothes my soul.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall it’s been amazing. I will always be learning how to best navigate all the aspects of staying on top of running 2 businesses, jewelry design being one of them, wellness being the other (I’m also a yoga instructor & bodyworker). The biggest challenge has been keeping the Etsy store up to date with the designs being one of a kind. Finding time to take photos & post items not only to Etsy but on the social media can be overwhelming at times. The best thing folks can do is to watch what is posted on either Facebook or Instagram and snag it there, that’s how a lot of my online sales are made now. There are so many constant moving parts – the marketing side, the administrative side, the finance side, the creating side, the client interaction… it’s so much work but I love it.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My designs stand out because they are one of a kind and there’s a story & a feeling behind each one. I’m most proud of my long-lasting connection with those who have purchased my pieces. I have clients who have been die-hard Drea James fans for 10 years since I started. They have literally a hundred pieces, if not more. I also do custom designs for clients, or as gifts, for weddings, etc. I love seeing their reaction when we get to bring their vision to life.

What were you like growing up?
I was obsessed with anything Hollywood, I wanted to work in the film industry. I was memorized by the history, the glamour, the drama, and all the fabulous jewels & fashion. I majored in film & visual arts and minored in photography during college where I grew up in California. I was definitely a dreamer and was always creating.
