Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Dailey.
Hi Alexis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a small child, I spent summers at my grandmother’s house in Chattanooga, TN. I would listen to her stories about traveling as an assistant with her grandmother across East Tennessee who was a well-known certified midwife. As a sickly child myself, I found my grandmother using the same knowledge of natural healing technologies to help me through some of my hardest bouts of illnesses. While battling my own long-term chronic health issues in 2013, I turned to natural medicine as a means to survive. I learned how to find what I needed through the elders and herbalists in my community in Memphis, TN. Over time, I shared her recipes with loved ones who also have been in search of a remedy for their health concerns. From knee replacements to PCOS, I researched the ways our ancestors relieved themselves and healed their own communities before and since colonization.
Today, Dailey Dose has served communities of color in their elder years, postpartum experiences, and day-to-day pain management. This business is a turning point in a business that started with a kitchen countertop and a shelf on the altar.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This road has been paved with magnolias and rubble. In a world where everything has extra chemicals, finding raw ingredients that won’t interfere with medication and other illnesses has been especially difficult. I have also had to wait nearly 10 years to open my online store because it takes so much money to buy all the materials, logo design, website, etc. to simply begin.
On top of that, have struggled with my own health most of my life from asthma, to PCOS, and endometriosis, and it has slowed me down economically as well as spiritually. I wanted to begin running my business once I was not only financially capable but also in a space where I would not sabotage my success. I spent many years building myself up, creating space of freedom and discipline, and healing from old wounds to prepare myself for where I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Public Health Sociologist, Educator, Advocate, and Birth Worker. I have served in the world of Reproductive Justice since I was 17, as a public advocate for Infant Mortality Awareness. I followed in my great-great grandmother’s footsteps and found myself as a caretaker for all the young mothers and parents in my communities who simply needed some to offer a little tenderness to them. I am now a Certified Doula, & I plan to become a Certified Midwife in the future.
I have served as an elementary school teacher, HIV Counselor, and I now am a Public Health Sociologist in a local government institution.
I am known for my love of the youth, Black people, and the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve never met a child I didn’t love, and I have a special place in my heart for our Black youth and our Black Queer youth.
I am known for being innovative and resourceful, which has come in handy as a community advocate and coordinator, where my jobs have consisted of acknowledging the historical traumas of the communities I serve and finding ways to offer healing and joy in their everyday lives.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My ability to connect with people has been such a strong feature in my success. I could sell ice to a polar bear if you give me 5 minutes with them. I enjoy being amongst people, hearing their stories, exchanging good energy with them even if it is only for a few minutes. I believe that everyone has something to teach us if only we are willing to listen to them.
