Meet Jersey Mic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jersey Mic.

Hi Jersey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Micheal Watkins – born in Trenton, New Jersey then later, moved and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Since a young age, I’ve been exposed to music and public figures before I even knew it. I first stepped foot in a studio when I lived in Atlantic Highlands. Music has been a major part of my life since that day. In 2009, I finally had my first chance to record and put my music out there. So, a friend of mine named Dayquan (Esco Andretti) from New York formed a rap group called “New Era”. We had an opportunity to be on a cypher with some people we knew from high school so we recorded our verses just to later find out they deleted our work and uploaded the song onto YouTube! WHAT?!?! So, I took matters into my own hands and started writing and recording my OWN songs. I’d walk to the studio early in the morning regardless if it were cold, sunny, rainy, etc. The first song I released was titled; “Worst World Ever” – a cover song to the late great, Mac Miller. RIP GOD.

This song later grabbed the attention from a lot of individuals as I promoted it to my family, friends and even on Twitter I’ve gained some listeners. That confirmed not only did I have what it takes to be an amazing artist but also that I was GREAT at writing. Through my last years of high school, I released cover songs continuously back-to-back to build a buzz for my name. Fast forward to 2019, I wrote and practiced a song I wrote titled; “Loyalty” from October to February 2020. A very deep and sentimental track explaining how and what “Loyalty” means to me. Next, a song called “Get Mine” BOOSTED my fan base and started circulating plays back to back. Due to my hiatus, I wrote a song titled; “Bounce Back” && it shaped my career for the better. Dave East && Busta Rhymes both contacted me and let me know that this track was amazing. Fast forward to 2021, I released my very first album; “Faith in Fate” && ever since then, my music career has been taking off tremendously. I had opportunities to perform in other states and cities such as; Brooklyn, Bronx, Portland, Orlando, Charlotte, Williamsburg, Atlanta, Tampa, Austin, Wilmington, etc.

I am never giving up. I will never quit. I will be successful!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been smooth nor easy for me. I’ve battled hardships such as being homeless, surviving pneumonia, heartbreak, death of my engineer, etc. But, my faith keeps me strong && I’m not giving up!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an avid and professional writer. I also had college professors expressing to me that my writing is impeccable and I need to take my writing to the next level. I’m known for my vast and expound vocabulary && my CRAZY stage energy. I’m most proud of the feedback I get from my songs & how much people enjoy my songs. My biggest separation is my style of music and personality. A lot of artists these days go along with the status quo. But, not ME!!! I have a story to tell and it’s a novel of excitement, pain, love, motivation, etc.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My music, family, friends, Sonic The Hedgehog, and most of all my son. These are all aspects of my life that bring me TRUE happiness. Ever since I was young, I’ve played “Sonic The Hedgehog” && it’s my favorite video game of all time! It makes me feel complete – whole. Like I have no worries in life and helps me to regain focus.
