Meet Melanie Wideman of A Little Slice of Heaven Bakery in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Wideman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the master baker behind all of the delicacies that come out of A Little Slice of Heaven Bakery where I make custom cakes to celebrate any occasion, from high-end weddings and retirement (corporate) parties to graduation celebrations and children’s birthdays. I can craft anything, from popular animated favorites, like the Minions, to a Tiffany’s box or a cigar box for adults. If you can imagine it, I can create it. It all started for me at 16 when I developed a love for baking.

Although my life initially leads to an engineering career, my true passion wouldn’t stay hidden for long. With the support of my husband, I left my engineering career to turn my love of cake making into a full-time business. Today, I am a graduate of the Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionary Art. I have completed courses lead by the famed sugar and cake artists Nicholas Lodge, Mike McCarey and Lauren Kitchens. My own professional repertoire now includes an extensive variety of design, decorating, and modeling techniques. I prove cake after cake that this new full-time job is the perfect fit.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has certainly not been easy in my quest to pursue my business. My business was established in 2010. During this time I was working full time as an engineer in corporate America and not able to work on my business until late evenings and would be up long hours fulfilling orders. Some Friday nights I would be up all night working on custom cakes and only getting a couple hours of rest before needing to make deliveries.

In May 2017 I left my engineering career of 18 years to focus on my business full time. While it has been rewarding, once we launched our online e-commerce site, the challenge has been getting our name out there. We ship our mini and full-size pound cake line across the continental US. We are hoping that once our clientele expands that the challenge of being an “unknown” will dissipate quickly.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Little Slice of Heaven Bakery story. Tell us more about the business.
When ordering from A Little Slice of Heaven, you can expect to get a from scratch custom made to order baked goods, designed with you in mind. From birthdays to showers, graduation parties to weddings, we will create a custom centerpiece that will be enjoyed by all. We believe a cake should taste as good as it looks. Your guests will rave at the moist deliciousness of our cakes.

Our cakes are not just intended for a special occasion or event. Our cakes are great to have on any day of the week. You don’t need a reason to be in the mood to have a delicious cake. Who says, “you can’t have your cake and eat it too”?

I am the master cake artist behind the business and the brand. I create custom cake designs with edible components such as cake toppers, flowers, and 3D design aspects that match the theme of the cake. What sets us apart is that our cakes taste as good (if not better) than they look. We believe that you shouldn’t sacrifice one for the other in regards to taste and look.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been blessed with different opportunities as it relates to my life and my business. While some of it has been due to knowing people or being in the right position at the right time, I believe a lot of it has been due to my hard work and diligence. That may be considered lucky to some, I see it more as persistence and knowing the goals I am striving to attain.
