Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaquila McWilliams.
Hi Jaquila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jaquila “Kia” McWilliams. I am a native of Gulfport, MS. However, I chose to move to Atlanta, GA, after graduating from college. I attended college with the anticipation of becoming a medical doctor; however, after beginning working for the Department of Veteran Affairs in Atlanta, GA, I had a “change of heart”.
My actual love and passion for fashion has always been something that has fueled me, since a young child. I can actually still recall dressing up my Barbie dolls and asking my neighborhood friends and little cousins if they might be willing to play dress-up with me; More often than not, I remember being the only one that was enthused by these things, not so much the same for them.
As time went by, I grew older and I began to self-indulge in even more things “fashion”, which included things like: sewing (making my own clothes), shopping, etc. I would read numerous magazine which included the likes of Teen Vogue, In Style, Allure, etc. in an attempt to always stay on top of current and forthcoming trends. I found myself in my happiest place, in my closet or when out and about, immersing myself in an environment that directly related to my love for fashion.
Fast forward the year of 2018, I found myself at work nearly every day, looking into careers in fashion. I just knew that what I was doing what not going to make me happy, nor did it make me feel fulfilled. I had a passion and purpose that was not being utilized. I always knew I wanted to work in fashion, but I struggled with the idea of being in front of the camera. I did not want to model. I did not want to own a boutique. I did not want to be a content creator. But I knew there had to be something I could do that would enable me to share my keen eye for fashion, and my ability to create with others.
I prayed and asked God for a sense of direction and that he might guide me along the way. For a few years, I never knew quite how to start my business or even how to begin attracting clients; so, I would start promoting my business, then abruptly stop and give up. I tried over and over again! It was not until 2020, that I made up my mind that no matter what came up, I had a God-given ability that enabled me to create beauty and build confidence through clothing for others, and I did not want to continue my life without sharing this talent with the world. I took some classes on how to get started as a stylist, reached out to some individuals for business consultations (to get a sense of legal direction, marketing, etc.), and now here I am, serving as a fashion stylist in Atlanta, GA and New York City, NY. It’s truly a wonderful feeling!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. The journey to becoming a fashion stylist has been extremely tough. I’m still overcoming obstacles, even now, honestly!
Initially, my toughest challenge was simply getting started. I was reaching out to individuals that advised that they were experts in the field, coaches, etc. and everyone was pushing and pulling me in all directions. I could not seem to wrap my head around what to do. It was not until I came into contact with two individuals, that seemed to truly have my best interest at heart, that I was able to sit down, thoroughly process and brainstorm my ideal client, styling services, etc.
Another challenge has been building a portfolio, which comes with smaller issues. Oftentimes, when getting started it’s hard to locate models, hair and makeup artist, photographers, etc. that are willing to working with you as a fashion/wardrobe stylist. It is essential to have a portfolio, but I always find myself asking “How do you create a portfolio, when other creatives box you out?” I found myself pitching projects time and time again, and being turned down from one person to the next; however, all it took was one or two people to invest in my vision and believe in me. Now I’m seemingly building my own network and better establishing myself over time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a fashion/wardrobe stylist who provides a variety of services to aid in building wardrobes and creating looks for clients; some of my services include (but are not limited to): personal shopping, virtual style consultation(s), wardrobe and closet revamps, and personal styling for a variety of events (i.e. formal events, speaking engagements, television appearances, special events, photoshoots, etc.).
I would definitely say that I am most proud of the fact that I am working in a field that I previously could have only dreamed of working in. With a little bit of faith and a great deal of passion, I was able to embark on a journey that has been life-changing and challenging, yet so fulfilling.
In terms of what makes me unique, different… I would have to say is my flexibility. Though I reside in Atlanta (Ellenwood), GA; I am willing to travel and work at various times to accommodate clients’ needs. So, if potential clients are in need of someone who has a somewhat “open” availability and is not rooting in one particular location, I’m definitely a good choice for a stylist.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I named my business “Styled By Jai” after my “alternate ego”. I like to think that when I’m feeling like Jai, I’m in my creative, stylish, chic, untouchable zone. She’s the version of me you see dressed up, out at dinner, or a night on the town, gazing through the windows of Saks, Neiman Marcus, Chanel, etc. On the contrary, Jaquila “Kia”, is very relaxed and low-maintenance. You can often find me reading books or research articles, and watching TV.
