Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesun Majeed.
Hi Jesun, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career as a Personal Banker for Bank of America. I learned so much about finance and the importance of credit while working there. I also had the opportunity to meet a lot of business clients who help inspire me to be an entrepreneur. Over time I got tired of working for corporate America and decided to start my own business. COVID had just become a thing and I was thinking what I could do and still be successful, while social distancing. I researched different things ventures and when I started researching funnel cakes I noticed the profit margin was high. I didn’t want to open a restaurant because of social distancing but I knew a food truck would allow me to meet people where they were. I called a few friends over and tried some recipes until I found the right mix. Then I played with some flavors.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey, but it has been worth. I’ve had some struggles with permitting and meeting all the requirements of local agencies. I noticed everyone had different requirements. Fire Marshall, health department, and city requirements. Some were more strict than others. And more recently I have experience staffing shortages to meet the demand.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We pride ourselves on our unique taste of our funnel cakes. Everything is homemade, we don’t use a funnel cake batter. When people try them for the first time they always say, “OMG I’ve never had a funnel cake that tastes this good!” Another top seller of ours is our banana pudding funnel cake, we call it Bananza Pudding. It’s my mom’s banana pudding recipe with caramel drizzle. It’s our top seller and people are always craving about how delicious it tastes.
I am super proud of our growth. We started as a food truck trailer and quickly outgrew after 10 months. We had to upgrade to a full-service food truck. This allowed us to increase our productivity.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe in the mantra it takes money to make money. I took money from my savings and invested in this food truck not really knowing how successful or unsuccessful it would be. I knew I had passion and believed it would take me a long way. I had to really devote a lot of time and energy into this business which caused me a relationship, that was my opportunity cost.
