Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Mendoza.
Hi Jose, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Georgia State University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. Soon after I was recruited by Orangetheory Fitness to become one of their instructors for their Midtown/Buckhead studios. I worked with them for 1 year and then I joined BLAST Midtown as their studio manager and part-time instructor in 2018. I was at BLAST for almost 3 1/2 years and then the pandemic hit. With our studios closing and no classes taking place, I had people reach out to me individually asking if I did personal training. I remember a coworker once telling me “make your side hustle your main hustle.” I did in fact have 2-3 clients I was training on the side but my focus at the time was just coaching classes and managing a studio. I never imagined that my life was about to change literally from one day to the next. What once used to be 2-3 clients slowly became 10, then 20, and now we are looking at 30+ people. Making this change was very scary for me. I had no idea what to expect. I was learning everything on my own and like many people I was scared I was going to fail. I remember for the longest I kept asking myself if I had made the right decision. I was now running my own schedule, my own business, and a team of clients that trusted me to create personalized workout programs for them. What I can say now is making this decision that summer of 2020 was the best decision ever. I have learned so much about myself, about the fitness industry, and just about life in general. I do not regret leaving the job I had to start something new and on my own. All the hardworking I’ve put into making this happen slowly has started to pay off. My message to anyone who may be in a similar situation is to believe in themselves. You are capable of accomplishing literally anything you put your mind on. However you will have to work, you will have to sacrifice things, maybe miss hanging out with friends, and adjusting your lifestyle. But the reward at the end is so worth everything.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve definitely gone through some things to get to where I am at today. The road has not been smooth at all but I do believe everything happens for a reason. Everything I’ve gone through I know has led me to where I am now and I don’t regret any of it. I’ve had my moments of frustration, moments of wanting to give up, moments where I’ve felt lost and confused but I think the key to making it through is to maintain a positive attitude and to look for the good in all the bad moments. There is something we all can learn when life doesn’t go our way and when we make our own mistakes. Sometimes you just have to pick your head up and keep going. Overcoming all of the obstacles and challenges that might present themselves is what makes us strong people and what makes this journey worth even more.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a personal trainer that specializes in strength training, aerobic training, plyometrics, HIIT, flexibility, metabolic testing, and more. The reason I created JAM Fit was because I wanted to be able to share with others my passion for fitness. I also wanted to help others change their lives not just physically but also mentally. I am a huge advocate of mental health and being able to help my clients become stronger individuals both mentally and physically is a win for me. I know I have a purpose and my goal each and every day is to fulfill my purpose. To wake up and be able to bring a smile to someone who may be going through a rough time in their life. To be able to inspire and motivate someone to take that step in becoming a healthier individual. To be able to help someone regain that confidence and sense of worth that they might of lost or never had. JAM Fit Personal Training is for everyone and anyone. It’s my goal to build a team of strong and diverse individuals who come together with one common thing and that’s to change their lives and become healthier individuals.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is to be happy. I think that when you are in a good place mentally you are able to share that feeling with others and you are also more likely to attract others to you. I am a very happy person in general and I really am blessed to have such an amazing support system like my family but also an amazing team of people that trust me as their personal trainer, and this is what makes me happy.
