Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Hoskins.
Hi Britney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a teen mom! At 16 both my son and my passion for entrepreneurship were birthed. At that tender age, I started my first business as an ice cream truck owner. I loved it but I knew if I wanted to make it off the east side of Detroit, I needed to go to college and that is exactly what I did. I went on to study business in Hawaii and returned back to Michigan to finish my degree at Central Michigan University for Entrepreneurship. Business has always been my passion; I’ve had multiple small businesses from 2008 up until 2018. The Top Pic Collective was born and it was like none of the other “hustles”. The joy I felt seeing people smile on their big day was very different. We started off small making centerpieces from the Dollar Tree before we grew to the celebrity event design that you see today. We went from humble beginnings doing events for free or portfolio photos to 60,000 celebrity events. With countless hours of practice and studying, we’ve been able to accomplish a level of mastery that sets us apart in the design industry. Our designs are known for their one-of-a-kind experiences.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth. Being a black woman that’s young that also has a family has presented its own challenges. Being able to get capital to expand and finding reliable team members have played a vital role in our progress and success.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Top Pic Collective?
What set us apart is our ability to deliver an experience that is unmatched not only do we provide beautiful décor but we leave guests with a lifelong memory that stretches far beyond a party. We include well-thought-out interactive guest experiences that match the theme of the party. We strive to fully immerse guests into whatever the theme of the party is.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
While we did not receive mentorship, I believe that mentorship is a key component of growth which is why we strive to provide it to up-and-coming designers. We recognize that the bridge between veteran and novice has to be a shorter one in order for people to grow and succeed faster.
