Conversations with Juanita McClain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juanita McClain.

Hi Juanita, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey into my teaching career in 2016. Not long after that, I decided that I wanted to share my story with the world in an inspiring and educational way. I began writing my 1st book, my autobiography, “Living with and surviving sickle cell disease” late 2016, which turned out to be my outlet for letting go some of my past struggles with Living with sickle cell disease. I began to use my writing and research as a coping skill and learning experience. I have written and published a total of three books all based on my experiences with sickle cell disease. Throughout my writing journey, I also began advocacy for the sickle cell community and have since become founder and president of the SCWB (Sickle Cell warriors of Buffalo). The SCWB is an organization dedicated to supporting warriors and their families, bringing awareness, and educating our community on Sickle Cell disease.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a very rough road to get were I am today. One of the biggest struggles is getting people to support my passion for Sickle cell awareness and getting people to understand how important it is to educate themselves and others about the disease.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Mother, Author, Teacher and Advocate. I specialize in Teaching Earth science to 9-12 grade students and Advocating for Sickle cell. I am well known for my role in Advocacy for Sickle cell, coordinating and hosting our yearly events and playing a major role in educating our community members with public speaking and community outreach.

I am most proud who and what my journey has made me today. What sets me apart from others Is being able to see my love and passion for what I do in my work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
At the start, bad luck played a role in my life and business because I often times experienced people who have given up on me. But recently, good luck has played its role with making the right connections and meeting the right people who make the struggle a lot smoother.
