Daily Inspiration: Meet Ellie Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Wang.

Hi Ellie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first job is actually about graphic designing. After one year of dealing with clients’ visual design needs, I decided to begin a career which allows me to draw in my own style and with my own schedule (which sounds so ideal and a little dreamy, lol.) Then I went to Savannah College of Art and Design, started learning illustration. The world of art is incredibly fascinating and attractive. After improving my aesthetics and skills, my works are recognized by a couple of professional awards, my peers and my clients. Even though there is still a long journey to go, the great scenery and experiences on the road has brought me confidence.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My illustration career was not quite smooth at the beginning. There are always gaps between “how much you think your work is worth”, and “how much your clients would like to pay”. I would always have to take some low-priced commissions, even though it is kind of harmful to the general illustration market.

To negotiate with the clients is also challenging – I started to value the importance of communication, which sometimes solves problems faster than my artistic creativity and skills.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently a freelance illustrator, mainly creating editorial, book and advertising illustrations. I would also take personal commissions to create some customized visual content for my clients. My work featured bright colors and dynamic lines, and fantasy is always my favorite theme.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
As a non-native English speaker, I am not quite good at networking. I always envy people who can quickly make friends in the industry, and my method is usually: post works like someone’s post and gradually get acquainted with each other. And that’s all. I would like to learn more about networking or probably mentoring in the future. 🙂

Pricing:
