Today we’d like to introduce you to Cydney Wallace.
Hi Cydney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a singer, actress, vocal coach and acting instructor. Before I could even talk, I was a singer. I loved singing and would sing all of the time, and for anyone who would listen. When I was 11, my mom suggested that I should audition for a musical, and that was when I fell in love with acting too. I started doing as many plays and musicals as I possibly could! I also took voice lessons and became a classically trained singer. I went to the University of North Carolina Charlotte and received a degree in Theatre and a Certificate in Musical Theatre. While I was in college, I started teaching voice lessons and acting classes at Talent inc the Studio, where I still teach today online. I have trained many actors and singers for showcases, agencies, colleges and scholarships. My niche has become teaching my students how to go from the stage to the camera, from broadway to the radio and vice versa.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Self-doubt is one of the biggest challenges a creative can face. I knew I wanted to perform from a young age but was told that it would be impossible for someone like me to achieve. I put a lot of pressure on myself to be perfect because that’s the only way that I thought I could be good enough. When I was applying to colleges, I chickened out of auditioning and decided to go for elementary education. But within my first year, I knew I had to study acting and I changed my major without telling my parents.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In high school, I was a classically trained first soprano. But when I started taking voice lessons in college, I asked if I could learn to belt instead of continuing in the operatic style. This allowed me to learn a completely new side of my voice and expanded my vocal abilities to sing in any genre. Now when I teach voice lessons and can teach my students to sing in whatever style they wish to achieve in the most comfortable and consistent way possible. I have students who sing musical theatre, pop, country, pop punk, and even rap.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For every teacher who makes the industry seem scary and impossible, there are three that will tell you how it really is. Which is fun and exciting and filled with endless possibilities for you and your talents. Look for people who want to help you grow rather than people who try to put you into a box. You don’t know what each opportunity has in store until you just go for. Go where you feel welcomed. Those people will not just help your craft but they will also help your confidence.
