Conversations with Duvon Leland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Duvon Leland.

Hi Duvon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Baseball has always been my first love, well second to my mom who actually played up to her mid-30s. I played my whole life but lost an opportunity to play in college but I did do a few adult leagues. From there I went to school to become a firefighter for a few years, however in 2017 my life took a turn for the worse I was shot in my femoral artery. In a result of being shot I was in a coma for five days and hospitalized for 2-3 months. While In the hospital I received 10 blood transfusions and 11 surgeries and was told I will never play ball, play with my kids, I might never walk without assistance again. While rehabbing at a local aquatic center I saw a sign for t-ball and wanted my daughter to play. Llyod Gay was over it and he told me everything was full but if I coached she could play if I picked up a team. I coached my first year from a wheelchair and that gave me the courage to fight back to a good bill of health by the next season I was walking/running and won a championship. Shortly after I started coaching travel baseball and training because I felt that love and passion again with the game like I was a kid again. Coming off being shot and losing my chance to play at the collegiate level. I started a nonprofit in the inner city to bring professional-style training, equipment, and education to help guide the youth in the right direction. As of today, I have trainees from 4-17 ages.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a smooth road so far. People have really been impressed with my story and vision.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a master barber stylist by day, and I work at a shop called The Barbershop Atlanta Salon in Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Where I specialize in all hair textures. Business wise I am a professional baseball trainer with certifications, insurance, and experience. I specialize in glove work, hitting, and pitching. I am known as the Baseball Barber and a players coach. My ability to meet each kid where they are in their development and pull things out without restructuring everything baseball they already have. What sets me apart is my ability to connect with each player on an individual level. as the “Baseball Barber” and a players coach.

Any big plans?
The plan for the future of Blessings of Baseball is to keep providing kids with the training and baseball knowledge. We also want to look into tutoring and having teachers on staff. Once our players get in high school we also want to employ them for the college resume and for them to share their time with us to the younger players. Also want to create a feeder system for players to find travel teams best for the players and parents.
