Rising Stars: Meet Jonathan Weston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Weston.

Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a builder. I build technology companies, primitive shelters, and camping and hunting grounds. I am building the future we wish to see. I’m now an author. I published my first book “Camping is for everyone” as I believe that the outdoors and our relationship with it is a critical element to our physical and spiritual survival.

My work in the technology space allows me to think about the future and what problems humans are working to overcome. I work with Founders around the globe as they work to build technology companies. I ask the question what problem are you solving and who are you solving it for? This framing allows us to get laser-focused on what we are doing and why we are doing it.

At Wanderland, my campground in Rising Fawn, Georgia, I find an opportunity to create, love, and feel connected with the earth. Our mission is to protect and conserve natural areas while providing a space for campers to enjoy the outdoors. Over 70 acres of beauty on Lookout Mountain in Rising Fawn, Georgia with trails connected to Cloudland Canyon State Park. Our slogan is “Camping is for everyone, Wanderland is for you”. We believe that sincerely. In 2021 We hosted hundreds of campers. Many of which were camping for the first time ever. They came curious and left in love with camping. That’s my goal. That’s why I build. For so long so many have been afraid to venture into spaces outside of their cities. Wanderland gives them a safe place to find a connection to the earth and the people they love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overcoming obstacles is a part of my brand at this point. Like many folks, my life hasn’t been perfect nor has it gone to a perfect plan. I’m thankful for the challenges that I have overcome. The struggle has forged a version of me that I am proud of. That would have never happened if it weren’t for loss, disappointment and struggle.

Probably one of the most chaotic periods of my professional career was during my divorce. It was so very difficult to concentrate and perform. My life was turning upside down and I didn’t appreciate it at all. But that’s when I turned to the forest and found my peace deep within its green love. That dark time is what led me to this passion and now I get to share what I have learned with the world around me.

Last year hundreds of families from around the country came to visit Wanderland. They found peace. They found untouched earth. They found themselves. That makes so much of what I have gone thru worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When it comes to the question of legacy, mine will be that of a builder. I want to be remembered for the fruits of my labor and the work of my hands. I see it as my way of honoring the god that we worship. Whatever god that maybe. In the honor of God, I build before the user understands why what I’m building is needed. This will be my legacy of working to honor the supremacy of god by building the future we wish to see.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I have worked very hard to eliminate the influence of ego in my life. I believe that the ego is a destructive element in all of us. My time in the forest has helped me hear the difference between my ego and my higher self. This is the most important skill I have learned in my years. Every day I see people denying the existence of their ego, only to fall victim to its effects on their life. Outside of that one of my personal mantras is “Think Like a Dog”
1) A day is a week so let’s get it done now.
2) If it’s on my plate it’s mine.
3) If you call me I will respond.

This approach to life keeps me on top of the many things I must do to maintain my success.
