Exploring Life & Business with Rena Rose-Bailey of 876 NyamMinz Jamaican Cuisine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rena Rose-Bailey.

Hi Rena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
At the age of 5, out of curiosity,  I started being a busy body in my maternal grandmother’s food and beverage establishment in Mearnsville, Jamaica. It was there that my love for food and all the nuances associated with great food was birthed, cultivated and honed. My grandmother’s cooking was the epitome of her soul and she delighted in serving others.  Today, i strive to keep her memory alive and continue her legacy through the preparation of true home cooking with lots of love, joy, laughter and the warmest of smiles.

I stay motivated by my husband, family, friends and customers.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As it relates to challenges and lessons, I’d say that the greatest one has been the lack of staffing  and marketing which as we know greatly impacts businesses.  We have since taken the necessary steps to make us more visible to the wider public. Regarding lesson/s learnt thus far is that as a restaurateur, one must be flexible and ready to pivot at the drop of a dime. Basically you ought to know the business   from purchasing to sales and everything in between and be ready ronapply oneselfin any and every area. It hasn’t been easy but it has made me very knowledgeable about this industry and for that, i am thankful.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
876Nyamminz is a Jamaican restaurant located in the Marietta area of Georgia, which prepares and serves authentic Jamaican food that’s made with love. 876 is actually the original area code for Jamaica and Nyamminz is derived from Ny’am ( a Jamaican dialect word which means to eat). Our Oxtail has carved out it’s own reputation for being the best in ‘Atlanta’. Our Jerk Chicken is done in a Jerk pan as it is traditionally done back home; you can’t get it better than that at the restaurant we also serve real Breadfruit Chips, Natural Juices and our signature Mama May’s Fried Chicken (in memory of my beloves grandmother). Our friendly and courteous staff is always eager to welcome and serve you. Due to the fact that i am an individual who is truly grateful and proud of my accomplishments, i am consistently being motivated and therefore, always trying to improve on yesterday. These are what sets 876Nyamminz apart from others.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would like to give credit to my two cousins – Kharim and Tamara who encouraged me to open 876Nyamminz and continue to do so; and the Lord, who is the strength of my life. My husband Kamar  who has been a tower of support. My brother Dexter, who is the nucleus of this operation. My sister Deneka for great advice, other family and friends. However, i reserve the biggest shout out for my late beloved grandmother,  Mavis Rose; for planting the seeds of entrepreneurship and my love for great tasting food and who, even in death, continues to motivate me. All i do is because of her.
