Exploring Life & Business with Sarah Walker of Sewalk8 Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Walker.

Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story began when my Mother enrolled me in ballet at age three. I continued dance training for 15 years, attending many camps, competitions, tryouts, etc. This is how I came to love form and movement. My body and my mind crave it. After high school, I turned to the gym and group fitness where I eventually began instructing. In 2018, I began teaching at a studio. The studio is where I was able to focus on teaching several days a week and actually see it becoming a career. Not to mention the very inspiring owner, trainer and instructor. I taught there for two years until it closed in December 2020. That is when I had to make a decision quick. Was I going to quit teaching or open my own studio in the middle of a pandemic?

Honestly, my instinct took over and it is like I leaped before doubting myself was even possible. Deep down, I knew it was meant to be. My mother had told me of an available space that worked with my budget so I went for it. The studio closed on Friday, December 18th and I had my first class Monday, December 21st.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own business from scratch, being the one and only employee is a challenge. It’s a great challenge for anyone wanting to learn more about themselves and their limits. Especially for us introverts. There is no room for lack of confidence.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
After both legs were broken, learning how to be active again and finding a form of movement that didn’t cause aches and pains took time, patience and a new mindset. That is why I teach what I teach today. It also is the reason I work very well with beginners or those coming back after time off.

My strict training taught me form which is very important for safety and ergonomics. My experience with injuries allows me to be able to show others what is required of the mind and body to safely become strong and mobile again. I help others learn to listen to their body, knowing when enough is enough or if it’s okay to keep pushing. Ultimately, I help others learn more about themselves which I think is pretty hot. I created a space to welcome everyone. The beginner, the intermediate and the advanced. The timid, the uncoordinated, the inflexible. The dauntless, the driven and the passionate. This is for the person who never thought they would try inversion yoga and for the person who always wanted to try it. All of my offerings utilize the trapeze, a suspension yoga system great for back pain, core strength, functional upper body strength, flexibility and balance.

All offerings help prevent aches & pains as well as injuries that occur in everyday life as we get older. You will reduce or possibly eliminate back pain, grow taller and stronger, gain flexibility and agility. I, personally, have never been stronger and continue to see new muscles and strengths after years of practice with the trapeze. I offer small group sessions allowing personal attention and modifications. I also offer private sessions and private group sessions. Through August offering Sunrise Trapeze in the Park!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Eighteen years ago, while on my way to work, someone ran a red light. They t-boned me, resulting in both legs being broken. My left tibia & fibula shattered and a rod was inserted into my right femur. I still have the hardware in my right femur. Learning to walk again was quite a journey. I had to be very careful and learn to listen to my body.
I’ll never forget the day I was told I could move out of the wheelchair and onto crutches. I went home thinking I could go to crutches right away. Boy, was I wrong. It took me a week of using a walker before I was strong enough for the crutches.
