Today we’d like to introduce you to Polly Craig.
Polly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have two careers. After I raised and educated five children, mostly on my own, I was determined to pursue both.
First, I have been writing for years, and I now have five books for sale on Amazon. The most read is “A Medal for Dr. Mary” It is the story of the only woman ever to be awarded the Medal of Honor. It received Honorable Mention in the national contest by The National League of American Pen Women. It has also received five stars on Amazon. An agent is now shopping my sixth book, “Outrage in Iran.”
I have been the Chaplain for NlAPW/Atlanta for more than ten years. My second, but equal, career is performing in motion picture and television. I studied drama and film presentation in Los Angeles for five years and have been a member of SAG/AFTRA since 1984. I keep well by eating properly, attending my local gym and practicing Tai Chi.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Raising five kids on my own was a challenge, but I never gave up studying to achieve my own goals. There were times when money was very tight because I had no help. I never applied for public assistance, because I figured the children were my responsibility. To their credit, they worked and studied hard. My middle son won a scholarship to Harvard. One daughter has a degree in criminology and was a police officer for twenty years before she was hurt on the job. My oldest girl is a critical care nurse.
All of this was achieved by setting goals and putting one foot in front of the other. The publishing business is tough, rejection after rejection, but push on. A film career entails much the same thing. Audition after audition… don’t call us, we’ll call you. But I learn the lines and choose an option to present.
Polly Craig – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I write and I perform in the film, television series, and commercials.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The success of my book, “A Medal for Dr. Mary,” because Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a surgeon, and spy for the Union Army, is one of the unsung women of the ages. Born a hundred years ahead of her time, she set the tone that championed women’s rights as well as saving hundreds of soldiers on the battlefield.,
