Community Highlights: Meet Courtney Fogg of Shugga Shack Sweets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Fogg.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My baking career started Thanksgiving 2012. I don’t pride myself as the best cook and I only have about five meals in my arsenal but I wanted to contribute to Thanksgiving dinner. The problem was that I didn’t want to ruin the staples- you know the dressing, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, etc. So I called my grandmother and asked her for a cake recipe. She then tells me to call my Aunt Ruby for her Key Lime cake recipe. I call Aunt Ruby and she gives me the recipe but proceeds to tell me not to tell anyone that I made it, to tell everyone that she made it until they eat it. So, of course, I did just that. Needless to say, everyone loved the cake and couldn’t believe that I made it. Was it pretty absolutely NOT-I mean I only had a bowl, spoon and butter knife to decorate- but it always tasted amazing!

After years of making the Key Lime cake, I wanted to try another recipe. Red Velvet is my absolute favorite so it was only right that I give it a try. According to my mama, my grandmother used to make the best Red Velvet cake. I called her to get the recipe and that holiday season we enjoyed that Red Velvet Cake.

Now let’s fast forward to March 2020. At this point, I was a stay at home mom with a nine months old. I was still secretly dealing with Postpartum depression and was needing and wanting some sort of outlet. I began looking at cake decorating on Instagram and YouTube and thought to myself, “I can do this!” And I did! March 2020 I made me and my dad’s birthday cake. Easter was a few weeks later so I made DIY Sugar Cookie Kits. Then I started to get phone calls to make birthday cakes for people.

Over the last 2 years, I’ve grown so much and I’m ready to keep going! I love what I do! And I love to see my progress. I can’t wait to see where God takes me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making and decorating cakes is the easy part but running and operating a business is not as buttercream smooth. Most people that start a home-based business think that becoming a legal business is not necessary but my are we wrong. It’s so many different steps that I had to take to make my business legitimate. To be honest, I’m grateful for that process because it made me get serious about my craft.

As you know, we’re big fans of Shugga Shack Sweets. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Shugga Shack Sweets is owned & operated by Courtney Fogg. I am a self-taught home baker with a knack for incredible quality and flavor. I specialize in custom cakes and delicious treats for all occasions. People love me for my Key Lime and Red Velvet cake flavors. The thing that sets me apart from others is simply me, no one can do me like me. I am most proud of perseverance through not knowing how to do certain things, not having adequate equipment and even not having the amount of orders that I’d hoped for at times.

Aside from offering custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and treats; I also host cake decorating parties for adults and kids, sell cake lover and baker t-shirts, and I’ve recently added cake toppers and Delta-8 gummies to my menu.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My ability to learn and keep going attributes to most of my success. And I say most because God gave me this gift and I feel that I am purposed to do it.
