Meet Matthew McGonigle of RetireCo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew McGonigle.

Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
RetireCo was created out of a desire to provide consumers with a better experience shopping for, comparing and purchasing insurance. Our goal was to make the entire process better and ensure that consumers had better education, more choices and the ability to buy direct or work with a local independent agent.

We started in 2010 as a small regional agency in 3 states operating with a handful of insurance agents providing access to about a dozen life insurance carriers. Today, we are operating in all 50 states, with over 650 agents providing access to all product lines and over 400 insurance carriers.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have continued to evolve to meet the challenges and growing pains experienced with such rapid growth. We quickly realized that working nationwide and providing access to so many insurance carriers was not an easy task even to set up, which took years to accomplish. Prior to our company there was no other company like ours in the country, which required the development of proprietary systems and technology in order to operate. Every day we are working day and night to continue to improve our agent and consumer experience.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We provide the best platform for independent insurance agents and their customers. We offer a unique platform that ensures that our customers can have all of their insurance in one place, with one agent and access to over 400 top rated carriers. We also provide our customers with the ability to shop and buy online or choose to work with a local agent on a product-by-product basis. And, we have developed proprietary technology to ensure that organizations (businesses, unions, member groups, etc) of all sizes can provide their members with direct access to a “shopping mall” type experience for benefits. Our model stands uniquely different than most of the major brands in the country. Rather than having a brand name that sells only one insurance carrier… our brand sells virtually every A-rated carrier in the country.

What were you like growing up?
I was always busy and involved in everything that I found of interest, rarely sleeping more than 5-6 hours a night since high school. I tended to be a leader, captain of sports teams, president of my fraternity / clubs, etc and aimed to please. In college, I studied for both a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science / Pre-Law and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design / Advertising, which were very different ends of the spectrum. These experiences seem to have shaped me for role I am in today leading a company that requires marketing knowhow with a strict adherence to compliance and business.
