Rising Stars: Meet Shavonda Miles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shavonda Miles.

Hi Shavonda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am born and raised in Decatur, Georgia. A true Atlanta native, yes, we do exist! I greatly respect my parents’ teaching for allowing me to participate in the Dekalb county Majority to Minority (M to M) program in the late 1980s. Being bussed across town to my new elementary school in North Dekalb county was my first exposure to diversity and attending integrated schools. It greatly affected my life by understanding and respecting different cultures. I graduated from the University of West Georgia and enjoyed the experience of living study abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Living with a host family inspired me to focus on journalism as a career. Monica Pearson was my inspiration to being successful as a black journalist. My international experience led me to work in media with CNN/ Turner Broadcasting.

After 14 years working for Turner Broadcasting (now Discovery Warner Media) with the Business Systems and Global Technology division, my team was a part of a massive layoff due to the downsizing and pandemic. After the layoff, I immediately searched for jobs, did small assignments with the Atlanta Voice, spoke to a career coach, and continued volunteering with the Junior League of Atlanta. Thankfully, I was asked to be part of Attorney Zulma Lopez’s state representative campaign in Dekalb county district 86. Being part of her campaign and working with her allowed me to use my media experience and learn hands-on about field operations and political processes. I sincerely enjoyed working with her and helping her to become the 1st Latina to represent Dekalb county as a state representative.

After her successful election, I accepted to work in my current role with Representative William Boddie as the Constituency & Political Outreach Director in his campaign for the next Georgia Labor Commissioner. Due to the votes of Georgians and the success of his run-off victory, I am now the Deputy Campaign Manager and, we are now the Democratic nominee for the Georgia Labor Commissioner as we wait to vote on November 8, 2022.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. After 14 years of working at Turner Broadcasting, now Discovery Warner Media, I was laid off. Transitioning from working in corporate America to becoming an independent contractor was a huge adjustment. It was extremely hard to find a job in 2020. I did jobs with temp agencies, networked with several people, and conducted sessions with a career coach. Having a positive mindset is important for making the best decisions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the CEO of Vonda Mone LLC. Since 2017, I specialize in media consulting services and assisting political campaigns. I am known for writing feature articles with publications, interviewing talent, consulting with political figures, and volunteering as an advocate during the legislative session.

What matters most to you? Why?
I believe in having the utmost professional work ethic and owning your narrative. I learned from my parents early in life that if you agree to do something, follow through with results. I want my son to understand and see that I am a great listener and give 100% to being a great public servant.
