Meet Sara Williams of Cakehouse on Main

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Williams.

Sara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I honestly never wanted to own a bakery… This is true… if you had asked me 25 years ago when I graduated high school if I thought I would own a professional kitchen… the answer would have been NO!… But our paths lead us where we are supposed to be, and my feet and hands are supposed to be baking.

I love what I do, I love my clients, and I love my business… but it chose me.

Soooooo… with that, I take every cake that I bake as a blessing and make it to the best of my ability. Taste is the most important factor to me when it comes to cake. A cake can be drop dead gorgeous, but if it tastes like poo… that is all anyone remembers. I believe in baking big cakes, tall cakes, lots of layers of fresh cake and homemade butter icing. We use fresh fruits and natural pure flavorings.

What people always ask… I am blessed… BLESSED… #blessedbakerlady… I have had the opportunity to bake for celebrities, for politicians, for princes and princesses. I have had my cakes on TV shows and movies, I have even talked football at the dinner table over Red Velvet cake with Robert Duvall ( I KNOW!)… I was lucky enough to be chosen to be on The Next Great Baker Season 2 (Yes, lucky) and in the kitchen on a few episodes of Restaurant Impossible with Chef Robert Irvine.

Those things, to me, are Vacation Days from my real life. They are incredibly fun, very meaningful events in my life, but my real enjoyment comes from my brides and grooms on a weekly basis. In 2015 I was blessed to have 206 Bridal Couples to celebrate with. That is really why I do what I do.

If you are on my social media, #CaketressGa @CaketressGa, you have seen my two amazing children grow to be young adults. Cakes have allowed me to let them go to school and to chase their dreams. One is off chasing his dreams and finished with school, while the youngest is finishing up college… or maybe she isn’t. Either way, I could not have done for them what I did, without my cake business, and for that, I will always be appreciative to my Cake Family!

Today I am more blessed than ever! In 2017 we were blessed with 311 amazingly sweet Brides and Grooms. This was our biggest year ever. My children are grown and independently working on their own lives, leaving me endless time to spend in my bakery and with my boyfriend of almost 8 years. Our calendars are booking up well into 2019 at this point. #blessedbakerlady

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Making cakes as an art has always come easy to me. The road to a successful business, however, has not been easy. There have been ups and downs both personally, economically, and physically and emotionally along the way. 25 years is a very long time to find a smooth road.

Building my cake business in Rome, Ga during my children’s elementary years was surprisingly easy. But, during my divorce years, by business tanked… how do you sell a wedding cake to a couple when your marriage with your high school sweetheart is dissolving? How do you then spend time focusing on raising children along when your business needs attention? Then, how do you begin to find who you really are at that point in life, when everyone associates YOU with YOUR CAKE?

On the financial end, we went from a booming economy in the early 90’s when wedding cakes averaged into the Thousand dollar range… To a slump for the next decade when price expectations dropped to a mere $300 budget for a wedding cake… To now a thriving economy that is still not catching up to the mid 90’s? I went from having a home that was paid for to divorce with no home… to rebuilding in a brand new area where I knew literally only 5 people.

I say this to say that if your passion is true and if your drive is consistent and if your heart is honest… your passion will bring you through. My talent is a gift. It is not something I learned, I have had to learn the best ways to use it, but the gift was not something I sought out or even deserved. I use the hashtag #blessedbakerlady for a proven reason.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cakehouse on Main story. Tell us more about the business.
Cakehouse on Main is a By Appointment Only Small Batch kitchen. We are located in the quaint Acworth area just before you reach the explosive area of Lakepoint at Emmerson.

We specialize in creating delicious desserts for our clients, who mainly exist of past Brides and Grooms from the last 25 years. We create their cakes and desserts to be exactly how sweet, how moist, how flavorful, how fruity, how chocolaty that they want them. Every cake we make for a repeat client comes with a story. My staff hears these stories and associates their new orders with past stories.

Everything we bake is already sold, so you are guaranteed the freshest product that you can get. We use the same baking equipment that is in everyone else’s home kitchen, we just put it inside a 3000 sq. ft warehouse. Our desserts have the feel and taste of a truly homemade product, with a professional flare.

We bake Gluten free upon request, Sugar-Free upon request. Vegan upon request… all with the understanding that we are a kitchen that uses flour, sugar, and protein.

What I am most proud of as a business owner is the percentage of repeat clients that come back every holiday and every birthday, along with the families that we make all the wedding cakes for, and then their baby showers that start a new generation.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Prayers are heavily said in this bakery. Blessings are sung, and gifts are given. I do not know about good luck or bad luck (except in the casino)… But I do know that karma comes around when you least expect it, so if I do right by my staff, my self, and my client… that leads to some pretty good things happening.
