Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawnell Sawyer.
Hi Shawnell, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my skincare journey in 2014. I battled with psoriasis and needed something that was gentle on my skin. I had a coworker that offered to make me a batch of whipped body butter to soothe my skin and I fell in love with it! Every week I would come to work with bigger jars for her to fill. One day she suggested that I try making it on my own because it was so easy to make. After making my first batch, I started making jars for friends and family. It took me a while to gain the confidence to put my product out and sell it. I finally put my fears to the side and started my LLC and opened an online shop in 2019. I started off with body butters being my star product and it turned into making natural soaps, creams, lip balm, face wash, body and beard oils. It’s still a continuous journey and I have a lot more in store for the future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I definitely faced a lot of obstacles and challenges especially within my first year of business. I officially started my business at the top of 2019. My shop was doing so well that I was offered capitol through my website platform. Later that year around November I started having health issues. My appendix ruptured and I had to have major surgery a few months later. In the midst of this covid happened. I felt like it was one thing after another. With all of this happening, it was definitely eye-opening for me. I was blessed to still have a full-time job through all of this but it made me think what would I have done if I was a full-time entrepreneur. It put me in a different mind frame and made me more prepared for situations that may come in the future. I have to stay ready and be ready at all times.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the owner of an all-natural skincare line called Shea Rootz. I specialize in making plant-based products for sensitive skin. My star products are natural soaps, whipped body butter, and body oils. I have a passion for this and I’m proud to help others that want a more natural way to treat their skin. Every single product is made with quality ingredients, clean hands, and a pure heart. What sets me apart from others is the way my product makes your skin look and feel. It transforms your skin’s overall health and makes your skin shine like no other.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was a kid me and my twin sister used to help my mom do parties and events. We painted faces and did animal balloons.
