Conversations with DJ Voltron

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Voltron.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Brick City (Newark), NJ. Being the youngest of 4 children, it was quite difficult to escape the life of music. Both of my parents are singers and my brother and sisters are artists. At a very early age, my parents would take me to see Broadway shows. As I watched the masterful skill of singers and actors, I began to carve my own skill in the entertainment industry. One day, my parents took me to see Savion Glover in “Tap-Dance-Kid”. As I reviled in the beats of Glover’s performance, I used my imagination and began to create beats in my head. I took those beats and put them on a turntable. Little did my family know, another artist was about to be born.

My older brother and two cousins who were already successful DJ’s in New York and New Jersey saw my growth and began to cultivate my talent. Influenced mainly by my main mentors DJ Haneef, DJ Stormin Norman and DJ Mike Lee, I vigorously practiced the art of beat mixing with 70’s Disco and House Music under the umbrella of The Almighty Music Company. While at AMC, I performed at many events, such as weddings and fashion shows.

I learned how to DJ in New Jersey and started off playing House Music and Disco. That’s how I learned everything. In 1995, I moved down to Atlanta and that’s when I really started playing Hip Hop and Soul. In the 2000s, I linked up with Rocharder DJs and the rest was history. I have met many good people music in the music industry and I am proud to say that many of those people are now my friends.

I’m an open-format DJ so I spin pretty much everything. I play Hip-Hop, Latin, House Music, Soul and everything in between. I’ll play anything you want. I’ll play anything as long as it sounds good. I like to have parties and events with people who really like music. I’m a music lover so when we get on the same vibe everything is going to be great.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had to pause for a while due to school and job responsibilities. DJing is super expensive. Especially back in the 90s and early 2000s. Also, It takes a lot of time out of your schedule and you really gotta do it for the love and for the craft.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m really a House Music DJ at heart. I’m also a turntablist. I love to mix, scratch and do live blends. In addition, I do weddings and Karaoke.

Like all DJs, I play what people ask me to play. But, there is no set format for what I’m going to play every time; I really love music and playing music that sounds good. I’m gonna surprise you and play that song that you didn’t expect next and your gonna love it, trust me.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Eat right, Exercise, Pray, and keep stressful people and situations out of your life and you’ll be good.
