Inspiring Conversations with Salina Williams of Elizabeth Cares Mobility

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salina Williams.

Hi Salina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I’d help my grandmother Elizabeth clean houses, and I enjoyed being my grandmother’s helping hand. My grandmother always said no matter your job title, you do it correctly because you never know who’s watching you. I learned at an early age how to have compassion and care for individuals with disabilities and the elderly. My grandmother was the primary caretaker for my autistic little sister, along with my uncle who had cognitive issues. I’d assist my grandmother with caring for my sister and uncle. While working in retail for many years, I built relationships with some of my customers outside of my work environment. I would make house visits to customer’s home to transport and assist them at the grocery store. I would complete light housekeeping and provide companion care to some of my customers as well. In 2020 I incorporated my business Elizabeth Cares Mobility, LLC, a faith-based home care agency in memory of my grandmother who passed away in 2015. I wanted to honor her legacy by starting a business that operated off the core values she displayed to everyone she met. Elizabeth believed in treating everyone with respect, dignity, and love. Elizabeth Cares Mobility didn’t get its first client until 2021, which was when I retired from my job and became a full-time entrepreneur. I enrolled in a nursing assistant school which grew my passion for helping others more. I decided to step out on faith and walk in my purpose, and here I am, serving clients with the values my grandmother instilled in me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has not been smooth. Being an entrepreneur is hard work. You work multiple positions when building a company from the ground up. I’m a social media manager, bookkeeper, employee, and owner all at the same time. My work days are longer, which range from 12-24 hour shifts. I’m working past normal business hours; ensuring I reply to emails and return clients’ calls. Lots of research was done before Elizabeth Cares was incorporated. Since I didn’t have much experience in the scope of care a nursing assistant or personal care aide provides, I had to enroll in nursing assistant school to get hands-on practice to better serve our families. I had to learn the inside operations of operating a home care business, so I’m very thankful for my mentor who has over twenty years of experience. I had to learn how to time manage and time block, being I work with multiple clients on the same day. Sick days are harder when you’re self-employed because if I don’t work, I don’t eat. I’m very empathetic, so it makes my job harder sometimes. If my client is in pain or crying, I’m in pain and crying with them. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint at heart.
