Conversations with Diezie Sahn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diezie Sahn.

Hi Diezie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started around the age of six in West Africa, Liberia. When my mother put me in my first play, King Solomon, a bible story. It didn’t make any sense to me or everyone else because at the time, I struggled with a severe speech impediment. But in her eyes, I was perfect, and she believed in me. And that was the beginning of my acting career. It wasn’t long until the 1st civil war started in Liberia, and it separated my family.

My parents and my siblings went to the Ivory Coast and I stayed with my grandmother in Liberia. It was like a movie when I look back. My grandmother and I traveled around until we settle in Guinea-Bissau. Later we heard from my parents that everyone was OK, and we later moved to the Ivory Coast.

It was great to reunite with my family again. When the war was over, we moved back to Liberia. My father got a visa to move to the state. Thing seems to be going fine until the second Civil War in Liberia started. This was considered one of the bloodiest Wars in Africa. After many years, it came to an end. We survived.

My father sent for my mother, and together they worked and sent for us. My siblings and I moved into the state in 2006. I was 14. While still in Liberia, I was pursuing acting and my love for martial arts and music.

But when I came to the state, my parents had plans for us. Like every African parent. You have to go to school and get a degree, become a doctor or a nurse and make them proud. My dream of becoming an Actor and my love for music and martial arts were not optional. Now that I am a father with two beautiful daughters. I understand I have to enhance my children’s gifts instead of staring them away from them because of fear.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think there’s ever a smooth road. Some roads just have less resistance. But I think for me, my struggle was overcoming the doubts and fear that were put into my ambitions by the ones I loved.

But ambition is ambitious.

So, even if you are unfortunate with more resistance in your current situation, you have to keep going. When you stop, it’s over.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My mission is to become Africa’s Action Actor on the big screen. I am currently based in Atlanta, Ga. I’ve written, produced, fight choreographed, and acted in several short films, and I’ve won best actor awards.

Some of my short films has gone to Indie night film festivals, International bright light festivals, Sundance film festivals, and American black film festivals. What I am working on currently is seeking investment and raising the funds for my first feature film “Fighting Cancer”. A boxing love story.

I’m very proud of where I am right now. Recently, I went through some dark times, but it was very necessary because it helped build my character. I learned that tough times build your emotional and mental character, and that is equally important when building physical Strength and Financial stability.

I think what sets me apart is I am simply willing to die for what I’m living for. And that is to tell African stories with incredible stunts and actions.
