Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandolyn Hellams.
Hi Brandolyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I graduated with a degree in communications and a minor in English from Charleston Southern University. I started out as a production assistant for a news station in Charleston, South Carolina, then about a year later moved up to a producer. I did that for about two years while assistant coaching a high school girl’s basketball team. In 2018 my husband and I moved to Lawrenceville with our then 5-year-old son. I did not have a job lined up when we moved here, it wasn’t until April of 2019 that I landed my job at Fox 5 Atlanta as a segment producer/guest coordinator.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned before, it was not easy when we first moved here. Before arriving, I was in talks to have a job at a new station, but that fell through. During that year and a half, I worked at a retail store and although I was grateful to have a job, I hated it. After being at the retail store for seven months, I got a phone call to come in for an interview for a position that I forgot I applied for, but the call was right on time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the segment producer/guest coordinator for Fox 5 Atlanta’s Good Day Atlanta morning show. I book the guest segments we have in our 9am and 10am hours. We have guests who range anywhere from John Travolta to Jamie Foxx. As well as guests who discuss finances, mental health and even restaurant chefs that demo recipes.
One of my most proudest bookings is my very first booking. It was with Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam of the Exonerated 5. It’s a story that should continue to be told, not only from other people but also from the gentlemen who experienced it if they don’t mind discussing it.
I believe what sets me apart from others is the way I make everyone feel like family. If you treat a person like family, then they’ll always want to come back, and even if they can’t come back, they’ll send someone else your way.
Outside of working at Fox, I also do media training classes where I give tips on television and radio interview etiquette. They can be either verbal and hands-on interview practices.
I also assist with event preparation and management for charity events and other organizations.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Instagram is a big help when it comes to doing my job successfully. I’m able to see what’s trending and who our viewers are tuning into the most. As far as my own personal belongings, I love a notebook and a calendar/planner. It helps me stay organized and to keep up with my daily tasks.
