Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlon Cabrera Jr.
Hi Marlon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Voice acting is my primary baby right now but I have a couple of other ventures.
Voice Acting – I was going through a bad divorce and needed an outlet. Something that kept me from thinking too much. I’ve always been a fan of animation and while watching an anime movie realized that there are faces behind those voices. I was always big on listening for who was voicing characters and would check IMDB regularly. After a while, I did some research for about a month and slowly started to purchase the equipment for an in-home studio in my closet. I am currently still studying and also open for booking. The long term goal is to break into animation and get at least ONE gig to outlast my lifetime. I would love for my kids and their kids to be able to hear my voice long after I am gone.
I also run a nerd news page TheNerdVillage. I have always been of comics and the arts. At the time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was reaching its climax with Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, I would realize a lot of fellow nerds wanted more or would reach out to me with questions that they had about comic storylines or anything really. I began the page and just before it reached 10k followers, it was disabled but I have since started another page for it on Instagram.
My final venture is starting a dating app myAnimate Dating App! Being newly single, I found that I wasn’t able to really find women with similar interests as far as comics, anime, or any other nerd culture. Find them easily anyway. With the app, my long-time business partner Greg Toler, and I plan to have an easily accessible place where people can come to “date or find a mate (friend)”… have access to local nerd events and convetions… just a place where people can be themselves. The catch of the app that will make it different is the profile layout. So while you will see be able to see the person, the first thing you will see is their “superhero” or “villain” profiles where it shows their interests in their respective fandoms BEFORE you find out the other parts like occupation, etc. For me, it will allow the connection to be more genuine. You are LITERALLY connecting based off similar likes. After matches are made on both ends, the “Secret Identity” profile will become available which would show the more personal info.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth, definitely not. I am a father of two girls so finding the time and being able to balance work/home life became a struggle. To be honest, it comes down to drive. At times, I would just know that I have to work to survive and I have to be a good dad… so after they both went to bed, I would then go into my closet studio and make things happen.
I also had to learn patience and that not everything was built in a day. So while I could have like 50 items on my “to do list”, if I at least cross ONE off or perform something that will help me cross one off, then I am still on track to be successful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main baby – Voice Acting. My range varies but I would like to think that I can do anything I set my mind to whether that’s commercial, character, or narration.
My personal favorite to do though is Character of course. I love being able to dive into another personality and bringing it to life.
I am most proud of my Optimus Prime voice.
My drive is what takes me where I want to go and need to go. There’s nothing that’s going to stop me from getting to that ONE place I want to be. My kids need to see me succeed.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risks in the V.O. world won’t seem like much but I think it’s more mental. The ability to take rejection is probably the biggest risk. You have to be able to take the criticism that the jobs are going to offer or possibly never hearing anything and just not getting the gig.
Mentally, that can take a toll and one time, I took a break from a month simply because it’s a lot to take in.
