Rising Stars: Meet Kayla Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Rose.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was younger, my parents would not allow us to watch TV during the week so when the weekend came that was the only thing I ever wanted to do. I’m not sure if it was the countless hours I spent watching Pokemon or the 25th time I rewatched every Harry Potter movie, but I completely fell in love with entertainment. When I lived in New York $5 Tuesdays at the AMC in Time Square became my home.

In 2018, I had big dreams of working in the entertainment field, which is a hard market to break into, so I decided I wanted to create my own lane with In My Theater. At the time I wasn’t equipped to put a ton of money or time into blogging, so the first two blog posts were published in Buzzfeed community. The pursuit of other dreams got in the way so I took a significant time off.

In 2021, while scrolling through the internet, I found that there weren’t a lot of Black movie reviewers. I thought this would be the opportune time to cut into the market even if I was only writing casually. Since then I’ve partnered with several different movie studios to promote their movies including Paramount+, Universal Pictures and Amazon Studios.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many people, dedicating a lot of time to your passion project can be a struggle. In 2018, I was busy living the life of a 23-year-old fashion/beauty publicist. I was hopping trains early in the morning to make it to work and dragging myself home late at night after an event, I had limited funds and not a lot of time. Although I had experience working with bloggers, starting my own blog came with a huge learning curve. I had to learn WordPress (which I’m still learning today), figure out how to make my blog legal, and how in the world I was going to brand it with my terrible design skills. I had a friend who was willing to create a logo for me and started setting aside money to be able to afford hosting and purchase all the resources I needed to be successful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in Public Relations. My first job out of college was my own! I created The PR Rose in 2016 with one client who I still work with to this day. My proudest achievement happened that year when I secured my client two features days apart on the national level via Cheddar TV and the Harry Truman Show. I am so proud to watch how those two media hits continue to positively impact my client’s career.

While I was finding success in freelance PR, as a fresh-out-of-college 21-year-old, I wasn’t entirely equipped to scale a business. Honestly, I made A TON of mistakes, so I pivoted and started freelancing with more established independent publicists in the Fashion/Beauty space. Having never worked at an agency, this past May (on my birthday to be exact), I accepted my first professional PR role in the tech industry.

My ability to change markets and my fearlessness when it comes to securing opportunities for my clients is what sets me apart from others.

What matters most to you? Why?
Bringing a smile to someone’s face matters so much to me. Life is hard, so when people read my blog, I want them to laugh, when I interview someone, I want them to feel comfortable enough to put their guard down, when I create content such as IG reels or TikToks, I strive to make them light and airy – just a little something to bring sunshine to their day.

This even translates into my professional career. I fell in love with PR because it brought me joy to be able to help others reach their dreams.
