Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Poteet.
Hi Laura, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a love for the arts, photography in particular. Photography has always been a passion of mine, ever since I was about six years old when my grandparents gave me my first camera, a 110 film cartridge model. My interest in photography grew as I found objects to photograph, as well as friends. I have to give credit to my mom for inspiring me to pursue my passion in photography. Growing up, there was a conversation she and I had that stood out to me. It was about following our dreams. While my mom was naturally a very talented artist, and she dreamed of pursuing that, she ended up taking a different path. Knowing that she and I shared the same passion for the arts, she told me she wished she would have followed her dreams and encouraged me to follow mine.
So many people have supported me and my business in some way and have helped me to get to where I am today. First and foremost, having my supportive parents and husband, who encouraged me to take the leap, and go after my dream to start my photography business. Having the encouragement of family, friends and the pleasure of meeting and working with so many wonderful individuals and families throughout the years. They have all come together to help me achieve my goals of first being a photographer and second of building a business around my passion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been some bumps along the way, and they’ve all been great lessons to learn and grow from. One of the biggest lessons I have learned along the way is to not be afraid of taking chances and stepping out of my comfort zone. Some of my favorite sessions and/or photographs are a result from doing so.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a family photographer and specialize in lifestyle photography. My approach is to photograph as each genuine moment unfolds, providing candid and natural shots.
There are a couple of things that I am most proud of. I’m proud of how much I have grown and learned since I first started my business about nine years ago. I am proud of the relationships I have established with families over the years and the friendships that have formed. When working with me, it’s more than just meeting up and snapping a couple of pictures, it’s an experience and about building a connection. I genuinely want to get to know everyone I am photographing, and capture the essence of the individuals and families, their stories.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The advancements that I see happening in the industry are trends in camera technology both for the professional and the hobbyist while increasing what can be achieved in picture quality and effects. For example, the changes in a smartphone camera alone, and the quality of pictures that people are able to take, has improved significantly. Of course, even with these advancements and trends, the photographic experience and end result are still largely driven by the professional photographer behind the camera.
