Meet Jennifer Poon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Poon.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always had a true love for arts and being creative was what fueled me since I was a child. As life got busier my passion had to take a backseat and it was not until I had children that I felt the desire to rediscover myself and passion. It all began as a hobby to decorate for my kids’ birthdays and milestones and that interest shortly grew bigger when COVID shocked the world in 2020. Eventually the business idea was developed from creating mini events for my kids, family, and friends. I can still recall vividly how I finally took a leap of faith and created an Instagram account to document my event styling work and then EVLA Designs was born! The name EVLA was derived from my children’s names Evan and Mila, who helped me rediscover myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say that it was a smooth ride but unfortunately it was not. In the events business industry we are challenged daily with keeping up with trends and ideas and learning how to differentiate ourselves. From my experiences and challenges I have learned that the best formula is to be ME and to stay true to myself! The struggles of learning how to run a small business with no experience was eye-opening. Learning how to manage rejections, generating fresh marketing ideas, and navigating the social media world was challenging. As arduous as the process may sound it has taught me many things that I never thought I could accomplish, such as becoming an entrepreneur. Let’s just say what doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger. This journey of mine has been far from smooth but I would not change anything about it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At EVLA Designs, we offer curated event design and styling from simple balloon décor to full-service event styling. We are here to alleviate the stress of planning and executing the overall aesthetics of each event that is unique to each client. What I am most proud of would be my clients’ appreciation for my hard work and how they value my passion and dedication to my art. I am also proud of how I continue to accept new challenges to elevate each event to the next level. Like all event stylists in the industry, my creativity allows me to conceptualize an idea or a vision and transform that to reality. Clients have shared that they appreciate my vision for colors and the skills to make a common event theme unique! What separates my brand from others is that I treat my clients like my friends and family. I sincerely care about their events as much as they do, therefore I will pour my heart and soul into ensuring that they receive their dream event.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
There is still a long road ahead for EVLA Designs and it feels surreal how I made it this far. The most significant lesson I acquired along this journey is patience and learning how to trust the process because with hard work and dedication dreams do come true and that is what my parents taught me and I cannot thank them enough. I am truly blessed with what EVLA Designs has achieved within only a span of one year and this is all thanks to a good support system made of my family, friends, and the EVLA Designs community. Most importantly I am deeply grateful for my husband, Johnson. He has been my gem throughout the entire process and is the backbone of EVLA Designs!
