Today we’d like to introduce you to Precious Jones.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The thought process behind starting my own business was I always wanted to have my own business since I was in middle school and I knew I always wanted to be a boss and run my own company. I graduated from Lincoln University Pa with a bachelor’s in Business Management. Film became my passion when I was in my sophomore year of college, and I got a sales rep job working in corporate. I had found out that wasn’t for me, and I didn’t like being a sales rep. That’s when I found my love for film. I loved watching movies and being creative at coming up with different ideas. I started doing production work for the church on campus and it led from there.
I started my business on campus and knew I wanted to become a producer because I was great at organizing things, I loved films/ editing and helping people achieve their goals. I used my gift to create my business. I connected with other students on campus and then realized I could create my organization on campus for HBCU students like myself to showcase our craft and not only get myself jobs/internships but other students. That’s when I came up with the name Jones Production, a production company for HBCU students to showcase their talent, help them get jobs/Internships in the industry, and connect with other like-minded students on campus.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I have learned a lot and I am still learning along the way. I have had a lot of challenges struggling with how I would get students to stay involved as a member because college students don’t stay that engaged with some of the things they are doing. Also, I have had challenges with people not believing in my vision and not getting that much support. Some advice I would give for upcoming business owners is to keep going no matter your struggles and challenges. Let that be your motivation, only see your failures as lessons, not losses.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What I do is production. I specialize in producing and editing. I am known for my passion and determination in connecting /networking with other businesses and got the nickname Producer P. I am most proud of creating Jones Production for HBCU students to showcase their craft and have access to get a better opportunity in the film/entertainment industry.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The advice I would give for finding a mentor is to look for someone who can not only give you knowledge but someone you can build a relation with a mentor who you will gain something from and that’s more accomplished than you to show you that it’s possible. Another advice, I have for networking is to always speak up no matter what because you never know who is listening or who you are inspiring. What has worked well for me is my networking skills. I have gained connections just from introducing myself and expressing my passion.
